The Arlington Independent School District, which passed on airing President Barack Obama's live classroom address, has announced that some students will be bussed off campus to hear a message from former President George W. Bush on Sept. 21.
District officials said it's part of a Cowboys Stadium field trip that the North Texas Super Bowl Host Committee invited 28 fifth-grade classes to attend several months ago.
In addition to hearing from Bush and former first lady Laura Bush, the students will hear from legendary Dallas Cowboys players and North Texas business and community leaders. The event launches the Super Bowl committee's largest-ever youth education program.
Students must have their parents' permission to attend, school officials said.
Dwight McKissic Sr., the senior pastor of Arlington's Cornerstone Baptist Church, said he's concerned about the district's decision to not broadcast Obama's message while transporting students to hear a message from Bush.
"I do not understand the duplicity in this situation," McKissic said in a news release from the church. "I believe the students and the public deserve and need to have these differences explained."
Obama told students to stay in school, work hard and set goals in an 18-minute speech delivered Tuesday morning from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va.
The Arlington school district, like many in North Texas, decided not to broadcast the president's speech live after some parents expressed concern about its content.
The district said the recorded speech would be made available through its Web site.
The school district allowed students with permission slips from parents an excused absence to watch Obama's speech at an off-site location.
Cornerstone Baptist Church was among the facilities that broadcast Obama's address for students and parents who wanted to watch the speech live. First Published: Sep 8, 2009 5:56 PM CDT
Goota love it!
The Republic of Texas sounds better every day.
There is the difference. Parents need to give permission. This isn’t just being forced on anyone.
My kids came home with permission slips for Obammy’s speech.
And I signed them.
Unfortunately, the school cancelled it.
Look, McKissic, you dumb jackleg preacher, I'll give it to you in words of one cylinder:
Obama has the entire power and force of the United States government behind him and is trying to use the kids as political props to pass his agenda.
Former President George W. Bush is a private citizen and has been very careful not to push ANY political agenda since his retirement.
Any other questions, you nitwit? (and what is a Baptist doing taking this line? Obama is against everything their church stands for.)
Cowboys, Bush, all that’s missing is George Strait. Hell, I think I’ll go.
We don't like Zero here in Texas. That explain it enough for ya?
Obviously, a church to be avoided. The pastor of this church obviously can't tell the difference between forcing all the kids in class to watch a broadcast and allowing some kids to attend a field trip with their parent's permssion.
By the way, any parent who wants their kid to see Obama's speech can pretty easily find it on the internet for replay. This event with the Bush's will likely available on the net (or at least won't be found very easily).

One man is one of them/us
one is a little emperor
In both cases, the politicians didn't speak to school children in their schools. And in both cases, permission from the parents was required if the parents wanted their children to be exposed to the message.
Though I will say that if school district buses are used to transport children to one of the speeches, they should have been available for both.
My 13 year old granddaughter came home with a permission slip too but my daughter didn’t sign it. Ashley didn’t want to watch him anyway. I don’t think many parents signed it. Obama isn’t very popular in this rural back hills country school.
“I do not understand the duplicity in this situation,” McKissic said in a news release from the church. “I believe the students and the public deserve and need to have these differences explained.”
What differences? Wasn’t Obama’s speech just about staying in school and other warm and fuzzy things?
I’m confused.
Oops! I meant the event with the Bush’s will UNlikely be on the net.
I’m a proud graduate of Arlington High, home of the Colts and attended University of Texas @ Arlington. As was my sister and my two brothers another Arlington city high school of which the names escape me at the moment . . . oops one was Bowie and the other ??? Back in the wonderful 80’s when things grew so fast that out of 4 kids, we gradated from 3 different high schools due to Arlington’s RAPID growth.
they had rev. Wright in to speak after the his preaching came to light.
It's about TRUST, something that is earned here in Texas and never given away.
