Newly fixed Hubble's initial photos again amaze

WASHINGTON – A refurbished Hubble Space Telescope is showing Earth the sharpest photos yet of cosmic beauty, complete with heavenly glows.

NASA on Wednesday unveiled the first deep space photos taken by Hubble since its billion dollar repair mission last spring. That work included installing two new cameras, other science instruments and replacing broken parts.

The images of galaxies and nebulas are sharper than previous photos taken of the same places by Hubble before the upgrade. Some of the colorful images have brilliant glows of light that give them halos that to some people can appear heavenly.

Hubble is one of those things that actually works and lasts longer than thought. Like those Mars rovers that were going to last a few months.

Wasted money that could have been better spent in America’s ghettos, bringing ahem....hope and change...

Handy to know which way is north and east. Is this off of Mapquest?

I love the one of the interstellar graph. Quite impressive.

Seriously, the HST is one magnificent device. Barring being destroyed by space junk, meteorites, or a hostile shoot-down, it will provide wonderful images for years to come. It's just too bad that when it comes to de-orbit it, a shuttle won't be around to go retrieve it and bring it back. It would look great in the Smithsonian.

“This marks a new beginning for Hubble,” said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The telescope was given an extreme makeover and now is significantly more powerful than ever, well-equipped to last into the next decade.”

The new instruments are more sensitive to light and, therefore, will improve Hubble’s observing efficiency significantly. It is able to complete observations in a fraction of the time that was needed with prior generations of Hubble instruments. The space observatory today is significantly more powerful than it ever has been.

Amazing how it went from the joke of the world to one of our most valuable scientific experiments, after a single repair mission.

When its time comes, I hope they fly a shuttle up there to bring it home. Providing we still have shuttles. The Hubble will outlast us all.

So east and west are opposite directions in deep space or is that east and north as viewed from NGC6302?

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain...

Thank you. Those photos are stunning. I am proud to have paid taxes for a project like this.

LOL. I assume this is a reference to Al Gore pointing out to a newspaper that a photo of earth from space was "upside down." One of the great moments in astronomy.

NASA may call it a “butterfly”, but the first thought that came to
my feeble mind when I saw the photo was
“D-amn, that’s one big honkin’ bowtie!”

Hope and change, ahem. /sarc

The beauty of the space program is that the money spent on it is not in space, it is in working people’s pockets!

Money sent to the ghettos winds up being used to get the folks “spacey”.

LOL!

Actually, "North" would most like be defined perpendicular to the plane of the galactic disk, and in accordance with the right-hand rule, pointing along rotation axis.

I believe "East" is defined with respect to the line between our solar system and the center of the Milky Way.
