Harkin to Succeed Kennedy as Health Panel Chair

Sen. Tom Harkin, the next most senior Democrat on the Senate panel focused on overhauling the nation's health care system, will fill the seat held on an interim basis by Sen. Chris Dodd.

WASHINGTON -- A fierce proponent of the public option and proud, self-identified firebrand liberal will chair the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, formerly held by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, FOX News confirmed late Tuesday.

Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, the next most senior Democrat on the Senate panel focused on overhauling the nation's health care system, will fill the seat that was held on an interim basis by Sen. Chris Dodd.

Harkin steps into the breach as the health care debate hits a crucial six to eight weeks of legislative activity.

Dodd decided against succeeding his friend Edward Kennedy, a Senate aide confirmed Tuesday. His decision means that he will continue to lead the Senate's banking committee and focus his efforts on pushing through a major overhaul of federal banking regulations.

Whether Dodd would succeed Kennedy, who died last month of brain cancer, was the subject of much speculation on Capitol Hill in part because the move would have left the financial reform effort in the hands of Sen. Tim Johnson.

Johnson, whose home state of South Dakota has attracted the credit card industry because of its business-friendly usury laws, is seen as considerably more moderate than Dodd.

Democrats are fierce proponents of all kinds of things we don’t need and don’t want.

Aren’t they afraid he might still suffer from trauma after his years of flying Jets in Vietnam? After all, that was all he talked about for years...even had it posted on his website...UNTIL THEY FOUND OUT IT WAS A *&^* LIE AND MADE HIM TAKE IT DOWN!

Perfect replacement for Ted Kennedy (D-HELL)

Better yet, give Tom a jug of ethanol in the corner and ask him he needs a *light* just like in the old movies.

This is certainly a guy who would be the antithesis of a poster person for healthy living, or anything else that is healthy. How low can the demos go?

Too many unionized Government 'workers' and 'teachers.' Who are overpaid relative to comparable private jobs in Iowa more than nearly any state (1st on one, 2nd on the other IIRC), but keep whining they are underpaid compared to other states. Thus the poorly paid private workers in the state are overtaxed to soothe their whining superiors and can't afford to outspend them on election day.

I’m afraid that is happening in every state. The only jobs in the “professional” section of our local want ads are for various counselors, therapists, social workers, etc. Pretty soon we’ll have a government social worker or therapist for each and every citizen!

The entire country is becoming a bunch of whiny dependents who expect Uncle Sam to take care of them. What a sad state of affairs.
