Obama open to 'sin tax' on fizzy drinks to stem obesity

President Barack Obama hinted he could support a "sin tax" on fizzy drinks to help lower high rates of US obesity, but admitted it would be an uphill battle against corporate and economic interests.

"I actually think it's an idea that we should be exploring," Obama said in the forthcoming issue of Men's Health, regarding potential taxes levied on soft drinks such as colas and other sugar-filled products.

"There's no doubt that our kids drink way too much soda. And every study that's been done about obesity shows that there is as high a correlation between increased soda consumption and obesity as just about anything else," he said in excerpts released ahead of the magazine's mid-September publication.

This sets the precedent that the government can control every aspect of your life if they pay the bill on health care.

Good. What’s good for one group is good for another. CONSISTENCY. Let’s make up our mind if we’re free or not at last.

First proposed by Franklin Delano Socialist during the Depression, if I’m not mistaken.

So no new taxes on anyone making less than $150K per year right?

I guess everyone who drinks soda must make more than $250,000 a year.

Aside from the nanny state issues — give me a break, Bambi!

Once implemented, you won’t be looking for behavioral changes from this revenue — you’ll be looking for REVENUE. The more the better, to hell with obesity!

Obama is raising middle class taxes through the back door! First, 68 cents a pack on cigarettes(90%) of smokers make less than 100,000.00 per year). Now cola tax, then chip tax, then a candy tax, then who the hell knows tax.

The Obamaloons don’t give a s**t about sin, they want the money.

And, pretty soon, the newly developing underground economy won’t allow them to have it.

How about “IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS”. I do not even drink that rubbish. Better off without it. But it is none of the government’s business.

Obambi already has a gubmint program 'paid' for by the taxes yet-to-be-raised.

Of course, when the tax $$ dry up b/c no one buys soda anymore, I'm sure the gubmint will just cancel the program.

Of course, a big health care expense is maternity. I would not be surprised to see the government say that only one or, at most, two children are covered by universal health care.

Right, slowly but surely, he is removing parental authority...and an individual right to make choices, decisions for oneself and their minor children.

If he was interested in revenue, he’d cut capital gains taxes.
He’s more interested in controlling your life.

Of course Libs never consider unintended consequences. If they drive down teen consumption of Coke and Pepsi they may drive up the drinking of real sodas, that is ice cream sodas and milk shakes and chocolate milk and DQ Blizzards and...

I’m going to go against the grain and say this idea does not offend me for a couple of reasons: 1. If they are going to fund healthcare thru tax increases, I hope it’s sales taxes instead of income taxes b/c the “poor” will be forced to pay their fair share. 2. The morbidly obese who got that way thru poor health habits should pay more for their healthcare in the same way a driver w/many tickets pays higher auto ins.
