A deeper look at the facts contained in chain letters reveals hyperbole, exaggerations and misstatements by opponents.
The e-mail that popped into my inbox started with an insult and included an attachment full of "facts."
After calling me a "crybaby" for writing a sympathetic story about Mexican immigrants, the sender insisted I read a series of statistics on the effects of illegal immigration on Los Angeles and California. Hospitals, law enforcement and other public services, he said, are being overwhelmed.
At first, because of the sender's tone, I ignored the attachment. Then it arrived again, this time forwarded by a friendly reader. He didn't believe the e-mail, he said, but wanted me to know that three friends had sent it to him. And 10 of its facts were said to have originated in this newspaper.
I started reading the chain letter, which carried the title "Just One State." It asked me to forward its message to at least two other people. "If this doesn't open your eyes," it declared, "nothing will."
I'm all in favor of having my eyes opened -- and then making sure my eyes don't deceive me. So I took the 10 "stats" and focused a little light on them. I waded deep into The Times' archive with the help of our librarian Scott Wilson, and made a few phone calls too.
What did I find? A stew made up for the most part of meaty exaggerations and spicy conjecture, mixed in with some giblets of truth. Two of the "stats" are the musings of a conservative op-ed writer. Another takes its information from a government "report" that is, in fact, a work of fiction.

The LA Cimes should just turn the paper over to La Raza. They have consistently run the “poor immigrant” feature of the week, even when an illegal gangster was released onto the street instead of deported and killed a high school football star the next day; the Crimes couldn’t acknowledge that the city’s sanctuary status made the council and mayor culpable for the murder.

The statistics in the email, if even off by a factor of two are eggregiously execessive....screw you Hector!

If illegal immigrants are a danger to the country, or its people, then the city could be held to be culpable of Treason; furthermore, they could be held culpable if ONE avowed enemy of America kills even one citizen/resident-alien/legal-alien-visitor(ie tourist) because all of them are entitled to equal protection under the law WHICH the city’s “sanctuary” status denies.
Well, he can’t discredit this one!

Wonder why California is broke??? Senior Illegal aliens!
Yes, there are plenty of reasons, and here is just one! California gives over and above what the feds give to Illegal Aliens. Yesterday I was at my doctor’s office and picked up a booklet funded ‘with a generous grant from the Calif. Bar Foundation’, titled, “Seniors & the Law” A Guide for Maturing Californians. They pointed out many programs, such as property tax deferment for seniors in financial trouble, that have been eliminated because of budget cuts...but they didn’t cut this one!

Yes!
Highlights: “California’s cash Assistance Program is for Seniors.... turned down because of their immigration status....such seniors may be able to get almost the same amount of cash as they would have through SSI”
It just makes me sick, it’s a slap in the face to all the immigrants that come here legally, learn English and work.
Cal is beyond help. The mayor of SF let an illegal out of jail for the fourth time and the next day he killed three in the same family; because they cut him off in a lane merge. Now the mayor has the gall and arrogance to run for governor. He should have resigned in shame and commited suicide.

One illegal immigrant in this country is one to many.
Why is it that if you cross the North Korean border illegally you get thrown into prison and get 12 years of hard labor??
If you cross the Iranian border while out supposedly leisurely hiking in the hills you get arrested and imprisoned???
But if you cross the U.S. border illegally you get a drivers license, a Social Security card and free health care. Who’s bright idea was this?
