Traficant talks 'turkey' hunting in first post-prison interview

Former Rep. Jim Traficant (D-Ohio) waxed nostalgic about turkey hunting trips in his first post-prison release, lamenting that as a convicted felon, he can't carry a gun.

Traficant called into the NewsRadio 570 WKBN "Outdoor Icon" show on Saturday morning, where he reminiscent about his turkey hunting trips with the host, Denny Malloy.

"I want you to know, those were some of the best times in my life," Traficant told Malloy.

"I think the hunters provide a very valuable service to our environment," he added.

But Traficant said that he cannot hunt right now, though, because of restrictions on firearms for federal parolees.

"I can't hunt now, the ordeal that I've gone through," he said, curiously adding: "I've got something for those turkeys. I'm going to do some turkey hunting on my own without a gun.''

Traficant said that he was unsure whether or not he would attend a welcome home celebration today planned in his native Youngstown, Ohio, but did say he would be a guest on Greta van Susteren's Fox News program on Friday.

The colorful former congressman did make some vague political commentary, reminiscing on when he once did battle with then-Vice President Dick Cheney over a "buy American" amendment.

"Don't mention Cheney, you'll ruin my morning, I'll get all bent out of shape here," he joked.

Times have changed I hope that they will bury the hatchet and fight on the same side this time.

Check state regs...Black powder exceptions can be a possibility for felons if they request an exception. Pannsylvania offers that. Perhaps a move east might work for Mr t. Turkey hunting could still be in his future.

Traficant was in prison at one time in FCI Allenwood, about 45 minutes from where I live. Also there was G. Gordon Liddy. I remember “The G Man” once said that as a felon, he no longer can own guns, but his wife sure has a nice collection...

Jim, why didn’t you vote to impeach Clinton, you bum. You talked a good game for months, calling for his impeachment. Then given the chance, you exonerated him on all 4 counts, you hypocrite. Take a hike, you coward.

Brought your reply here, because the other thread was locked...

Ain’t nothing wrong with shooting a wild turkey with a bow. It takes a *REAL* woodsman to get close enough, then pull off the shot. Go get ‘em, Congressman!!!

Exactly right.
With the ammo shortage an even better idea.

On a side note I enjoyed browsing his paintings while he was in prison.
I wonder whether he'll continue to paint now that he's out.

I liked one with a barn in snow very much
(reminded me of a poem)

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
