Islamic search engine ImHalal filters out potentially sinful material

Muslims will be able to surf the internet without the fear of accidentally encountering sinful material after a Dutch company launched the world’s first Islamic search engine.

The ImHalal service works like any other search facility until potentially illicit words are entered, when it rates the search from one to three on its risk of generating “haram” or forbidden material.

Reza Sardeha, founder of AZS Media Group which runs the search engine, said: “The idea grew up when some friends of mine complained that when they searched on Google or Yahoo once in a while they bumped into sexually explicit content.”

About 100,000 separate users have accessed the site since its launch on Wednesday, but this is small fry compared with Mr Sardeha’s ultimate ambition — to become the standard homepage for the world’s online Muslims, who number at least 100 million.

Seven months in development, the search is available in 15 languages including Arabic, Chinese, Farsi and Turkish, as well as English. The company expects its largest audience to develop in the Middle East.

When a search rates one or two on the haram scale, the user can still decide to take the risk and click through to the results. But a three-rated search yields no results, only the message: “Oops! Your search inquiry has a Haram level of 3 out of 3! I would like to advise you to change your search terms and try again.”

Mr Sardeha said: “Before we started

No lovely, naked female handiwork of whatever they call God, but all the beheadings, hangings, stonings, rapes, honor killings (with 'proper' Koranic validation(s).. ) a young Jihadist would ever want.

Spit on Allah and donkey do his prophet greatly.

Are Muslim men really this unprepared to deal with the temptation of a link to sexually explicit website? Most people who don't want to see such sites ignore them. It's of a piece with the Muslim desire to conceal women from head to toe - apparently even the site of a female forearm or eye brow might trigger ungovernable passions in Muslim men.

Maybe Muslim men should just learn to develop the sort of self-control most 5 year olds are capable of, and stop insisting that the world be sanitized for their protection.

If my recollection of past FR threads is correct, it will also have to filter out references to these things that have set off the Muslims in the past:

- dogs
- weather reports (”sorcery”)
- kites
- bacon / ham / etc.
- alcohol, including antiseptic wipes &c
- Valentine’s Day
- art representing you know who
- random swirly art (examples: Burger King ice cream cones and some brand of sneaker) that resembles their chicken-scratch for “Allah”
- representative art that is not religious in nature
- in fact, most art
- for the same reason, most music as well
- oh that’s right, The Bible and other religious books
- most clothing as well, especially swimwear
- anything about homosexuality
- being clean shaven
- anything about unmarried, unrelated men and women being together for any reason

I’m pretty sure there are others.

I’m sure a lot of “truth” is listed under “sinful,” too.

Reminds me of attending college in DeKalb, Illinois when I was stone cold broke and only had a b/w television set that could only barely pick up one station. I felt like cutting my OWN head off.
