President Obama's Address To Students
Broward County Public Schools ^ | 09/04/09 | Jim Notter, Superintendent of Broward County Schools

Posted on 09/04/2009 4:33:43 PM PDT by Recovering_Democrat

On Tuesday, September 8, 2009, Broward County Public Schools students will have the opportunity to watch an online national address from President Obama on the importance of education. The Web address can be seen locally in Broward County at 12 noon on the White House Web site (www.whitehouse.gov/live), and broadcast live on BECON Channel 24.

According to Superintendent James F. Notter, there have been several calls into the Superintendent’s Office suggesting and/or requesting that alternative space and activities be provided for those students wishing to “opt out” of this activity.

“As one of the premier major school systems in America, we have consistently encouraged civics education in the broadest sense, e.g., Kids Voting, elected officials participating in Career Days, countywide broadcast of Inaugural address, etc.,” said Notter. “Therefore, providing for a separation from this Address does not align with our practices and responsibility to provide a well rounded, quality education for all students. This is the first time an American President has spoken directly to students on the importance of education and the challenge to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for one’s learning.”

Schools will have the option to record or obtain a copy of the Address for later educational use, due to individual school needs, such as, tests at that time, field trips, prior scheduled events, and other reasonable conflicts.

Direct quote from Broward Superintendent Jim "I KNOW BETTER THAN YOU" Notter
regarding an "opt out" option requested by parents:

"Therefore, providing for a separation from this Address does not align with our practices and responsibility to provide a well rounded, quality education for all students."

In other words, "YOU PARENTS HAVE A CUP OF STFU. WE WILL OBEY HUSSEIN & NOT YOU PEOPLE!"

Those parents need to see if they can find a way to apply the Hatch Amendment. Anyone here effected by this decision needs to look into it.

This same school district just this week dropped the word "negro" from a survey because it offended some African American parents who complained.

Yes, but your kid must be there to hear the “negro” speak anyway!

this is the condescending reply I received from my son’s middle school principal

Ms. xxxxx,

My decision with regard to this, like the use of any other outside resource, is based on my standard of what is in line with the curriculum of the state of Alabama in relation to a particular grade level and subject matter and guidelines given to me b y my supervisors. There is no plan to show the speech school-wide. Each teacher is allowed to make that decision with regards to his/her individual class but is expected to consult with me about anything questionable. I deem a speech from any president important to the education of a child and likely could fit into the curriculum of a civics related class. All citizens should show respect to any of our presidents. They were all properly elected by a majority of electorates representing each citizen of this country. If a parent objects to the content, they can talk around the dinner table about why they disagree and what beliefs they have. A fifteen minute speech will never sway a child like a parents’ lifelong influence. As for notification, we don’t notify parents of curriculum decisions. These are made continually and it would be very burdensome to notify parents that often. We follow the published state course of study. I hope this clarifies this matter for you. If not, I will be glad to answer any further questions you have. Have a good day.

I am ccing my response to Mr. xxxxxx. I am not sure how often he checks the email to which you sent your questions. That’s why I responded. If he has further comment I am sure he will respond.

and this was my reply back

Thank you both for your replies. I’m sorry that you felt the need to include a lecture on patriotism, proper respect and protocol in your response, Mr. Highfield. I was concerned with the pre-speech and post speech activities that were included by the NEA, which by the way, have now been changed and rightfully so. This particular issue has caused much discussion and communication with school systems nationwide by concerned parents and I should not be made to feel guilt or shame in my basic questions of 1) are you showing it and 2) is it required. My children have been with the Madison County School system for 10 years and I have always supported their teachers 100%, extra activities, and volunteer whenever possible. I much prefer the reply I received from Mr. Long who simply answered the questions, mentioned Dr. Davis’ directive and that an alternate assignment could be given IF any teachers chose to participate and he thanked me for my email. Have a nice day.

xxxxxx xxxxxx

Kids voting - what a lesson in civics. Casting votes that don’t matter means nothing. My parents used to take us into the voting booths with them when we were young. That, and listening to them discuss the candidates before they voted was an education. Pretending to vote does nothing.

Some of you might want to consider putting in that this President has appointed a known radical communist to his administration and that in and of itself is enough to give any American pause to worry about what is coming next.

There is a sample of a model letter to send using the Hatch amendment on this site. I am not sure this particular situation applies. I haven’t done any research on it.

They can’t ask your student about your political affiliation..but this isn’t quite the same thing.

Let him know how you feel:

Superintendent Of Schools Phone Fax
James F. Notter 754.321.2600 754.321.2701

Broward County Public Schools
600 SE Third Ave. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 USA

supt_notter@browardschools.com

The email address is the exact text above. It is not a link.

I also strongly encourage any parents who are keeping their kids at home that day to state their reasons in the strongest of terms. James Notter is an azzhat. You know how to raise your kids and damn him for insinuating the opposite.

Notter runs the school board like a ponzi scheme. Millions and millions have been wasted in pizz poorly managed construction contracts under his watch. The district is losing students at a steady rate, yet he is still insisting on constructing yet more schools instead of shifting kids east where there are plenty of empty desks. He probably thinks Obama is the best role model ever given his own job performance.

A relative had a daughter who attended a Broward County School. It was so bad that they paid money they could ill-afford to put her in private school.

Standard operating procedure for Broward county. They did the same thing after Columbine when Clinton rushed out to smear conservatives and gun owners in his hour long speech. The parents only found out that Broward county forced all the kids from K through 12 to watch Clinton do his thing after the fact. My son got in trouble (because he was bored out of his skull at the ripe age of 10) and I found out the public school was doing this because of talking to the VP about why he was in detention.

Needless to say I worked my way up to the superintendent of Broward county (may even be the same guy) and had it out with him. Same BS as now, we the school know better than the parents, blah, blah, blah, ...

It is time for Americans to clue in that the public school has become nothing more than a treadmill to shape children’s belief systems for the Alinsky revolutionaries.

Pretending to vote does nothing.

Oh, I think it does something. The students are taught by the liberal teachers that there is a "right" vote to make. All the students who want to be "right" vote for the liberal. I remember well.

Let him see how he likes his decision when many parents keep their children home that day, which will result in a large monetary loss for the school district.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

The Hatch Act would not impact this circumstance.

Try this link to print out a single page on the Hatch Act -

http://www.osc.gov/documents/hatchact/post_ha1.htm

BUT... you can turn to the PPRA (Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment) [20 U.S.C. 123h; 34 CFR Part 98].

If you read it carefully, you will see that a pupil’s interaction in this event could result in the child revealing his/her/family political affiliations.

It is wrong to involve children in political situations at school without the direct permission and/or guidance of the parents. Remember, this is not certified history or civics being taught, and they had a lesson plan sculpted for it. It is a speech that is being given by a person not certified as a teacher to teach our children; one that will not even allow the public revelation of his own academic papers.

“They” (the school system) did not inform us in a timely fashion (preferably in written form) this was going to occur, so “we” (the parents), to the best of our ability in the short time frame presented, should either inform them of the PPRA and direct them to offer alternate lesson instruction, or if unlawfully refused, then keep the child home from school that day.

Apparently Mr. Notter is unaware of the PPRA. My son is a magnate student in Fort Lauderdale High School (Broward County) and due to Mr. Notter’s statement will not be attending school on Tuesday.

YOU (the parents) have the ultimate authority over your children (as you will be held wholly accountable for them until 18). No law can usurp this relationship except for laws that have been voted in by us or our representatives. (See why it is SO important that we elect the right representatives?)

Try this link to print out a single page on the PPRA -

http://www.ed.gov/print/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ppra/index.html

As an extension to this subject, the impact of events like this are very great on young minds. Young minds are not yet fully molded by you, the parents. It is in this very frame that I tell you the 26th Amendment (changing the voting age from 21 to 18 in 1972) was one of the worst to be ratified.

Good luck, and don’t give up the good fight against socialism, as it would be this nation’s doom.

He was just on Fox News.

He won't let them opt out, won't let parents attend, and said there will be punitive punishment for students that don't attend.

OUT OF CONTROL PUBLIC EDU-CRAT, boldly claiming the deal that the leftists in the NEA have so carefully constructed for five decades, now that their people are in our U.S. Administration.
