Why a flexible timetable to withdraw U.S. troops will best advance our national security interests.
After nearly eight long years, we seem to be no closer to the end of the war in Afghanistan. In fact, given the current buildup of U.S. troops and the possibility that even more may be deploying soon, many Americans, and many Afghans, wonder what we hope to achieveand when our service members will start to come home.
We went into Afghanistan with a clear mission: to destroy those who helped to perpetrate the horrific 9/11 attacks. I voted to authorize sending our forces there because it was vital to our national security, and I strongly criticized the previous administration for shortchanging that mission in favor of a misguided war in Iraq.
President Barack Obama is rightly focusing on this critical part of the world. But I cannot support an open-ended commitment to an escalating war in Afghanistan when the al Qaeda operatives we sought have largely been captured or killed or crossed the border to Pakistan.
We need to start discussing a flexible timetable to bring our brave troops out of Afghanistan.

US out of Japan and Germany NOW!
Not this crap again. This is how it always starts when the Rats want to declare defeat and cut and run out of a war.
We could re-deploy to Guam ?
I am really let down about the graphic photos of the U.S. Marines and their lack of honor. They dishonor the country, the flag, the Ambassador..probably not the President of the USA. I wonder if I were a soldier if I’d still want to fight in Afghanistan, knowing we had some dirt balls guarding the Ambassador. How nightfall has come upon the nation and no one even knew.

H! is just pissed she wasn’t invited.
Why doesn’t the US come up with a strategy to win the war which includes enough resources and manpower to kill those that oppose us. The soldiers on the ground need support. We need air strikes, artillery and tank support for each tactical operation. When someone is shooting at us with an AK 47 or a grenade launcher we should fire back with tank and artillery weapons. The US soldier walking across the plain or climbing that mountain should have the entire material support of our nation.
