Just when you thought the culture wars were ancient history comes this news bulletin: Conservatives are up in arms over President Obamas planned speech to schoolchildren Tuesday, the day millions of Americans return to work and school after the Labor Day holiday, touting the value of education.
After a summer of stoking controversy over nonexistent death panels in healthcare plans, critics on the right are now charging that the White House -- which plans to broadcast the speech live on the White House website and over C-SPAN -- is trying to indoctrinate their innocents on issues like healthcare reform and federal spending. Thanks to conservative talk radio and the right-wing blogosphere, Obamas speech to children has been turned into a lighting rod for socialism.
As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education -- it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality, said Oklahoma state Sen. Steve Russell. This is something youd expect to see in North Korea or Saddam Husseins Iraq.
Even the chairman of a state Republican Party, Jim Greer in Florida, has joined the fray, warning that Obama is trying to "indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda."
With rumors spreading faster than a California wildfire, school districts in six states -- Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin -- have opted out and will not show the speech. Others are mulling it over.

To be fair, the Education Department in Washington may have helped stoke the controversy by suggesting in a lesson plan to teachers that, as part of the presidential moment, they could ask students to write letters to themselves about

Johanna Neuman of the Los Angeles Times yesterday misrepresented First Lady Laura Bush's words to make it seem like she was backing away from GOP veep candidate Sarah Palin's criticism of Senator Barack Obama's community organizing days.
******
If a journalist ever wanted to exhibit her spectacular ignorance and bias, the Los Angeles Times' Johanna Neuman performed with flying colors. In a recent blog post about the surprise congratulatory phone call from the Bush family to Rush Limbaugh's radio show, Neuman offered
"We imagine the reason the tape has not yet popped up on YouTube is that is was singularly lacking in the biting, mean-spirited, politically pointed invective for which Limbaugh is known and loved by millions."

There's hope for our school system after all.
What I can’t figure out is why they care that we call them socialists since they are. Is it because they think the voters care? Must be. They should be like the gay community and come out of the closet.
I want the other group to get back in that closet!!
Obama is a Socialist and you leave my Mama outa this!
They have seen that the US populace will not allow our children to be brain washed.
It will come back again. Keep your antenna up.
Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.

Johanna seems to be confounding the meaning of the word “taunt” with the meaning of the word “observation.”
Hey Morinica:
If you want to see "biting, mean-spirited, politically pointed invective", we could post some typical DU comments here. Of course, we have to censor every other word or so because of the crass and vulgar language.
Now take a bath, use some deodorant and get yourself down to the free clinic.
The school district that my granddaughter attends(she’s in HS)phoned yesterday and said that after myriad complaints they would not be showing the speech. This is an extremely red county in Northern California. Northeastern to be exact. Not all of CA is a communist sh**hole.
I agree... and to make that deeper, most states aren’t blue (meaning the population of a state as a whole)...
The majority of small cities/towns and rural areas are overwhelmingly conservative (I hate using the term “red”). The problem lies within major cities... but I am sure you already know that, but I can see where you are coming from since many people (including myself when I get ‘wee weed’ off enough) stereotype a state as a whole.
Just keep your friends and family working hard to keep the socio-communists at bay (hopefully eliminate them).
Why should the cities or urban states, by default, run the government that tries to affect all of us?
Who thought that?
Well, yeah. They were nonexistent AFTER they were removed.
That's like you're wife asking you where that lipstick on your collar came from and you quickly wipe it off and say, "There's no lipstick on my collar."
How stupid would you have to think your wife is to try that?
Ahhhhh....another one of those pesky "nonexistent rumors" that had to be removed, eh?
Removing non-existent rumors has become more of an epidemic than The Swine Flu.
