It has been my contention for the past decade that when it comes to politics, as Florida goes, so goes the nation.
Think about the 2008 presidential election. First, following the CNN-YouTube debate, the last major Republican debate to be held before the Iowa caucus, our firm polled Floridians for the Florida Chamber of Commerce. We asked respondents who won the debate. A then-unknown candidate was the clear winner, and the boost he received in Florida gave Mike Huckabee a win in Iowa just over a month later.
The tipping point in the Republican presidential contest was Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's endorsement of John McCain in that state's GOP primary. Soon afterward, McCain won an upset victory in New Hampshire. It propelled him to the nomination.
Then in November 2008, a large, disenchanted contingent of independent voters, who in prior years had tilted Republican, switched sides and put Florida in the Barack Obama column.
This past year our polling firm, InsiderAdvantage, was named one of the three most accurate national pollsters for that 2008 race. That distinction came to us from the polling guru that Time magazine named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world. So now the heat is on us to get 2012 right, as well.
That's why I'm focused on an apparently obscure state Senate special election race in a region dominated by greater Jacksonville. By coincidence, this nationally syndicated column is based out of that city's newspaper, the Florida Times-Union. The election is to replace a distinguished senator who died a few weeks back.
How could this comparatively small election be so important? Because it summarizes every aspect of what will become a national battle for the future direction of the Republican Party.

I’m not sold on Rubio yet, but I’m solidly against the Damned RINO turd Crist.
Yo Charlie, have you retrieved your lips from obammys marxist ass yet?
most likely they will need to be surgically removed (would obamacare cover that ?)
Remove?
Nope, the administration is trying to force us all to have our lips tattooed on the posers ass.
This columnist has a point, these type of races within the Republican party will tell us whether we (conservatives) will stick with them or form our own Conservative Party (go Sarah!). However, I do have a problem with this quote from the article “(he)represents the conservative but pragmatic side of the GOP that was exhibited by both President Bush 41 and President George W. Bush.” The Bushes conservative but pragmatic? Get real. They are the leaders of the RINOs.
This is actually about the Florida State Senate race and seems to be a puff piece for Quiggle.
Quiggle definitely came out of nowhere. But he seems to have bunches of money and has spent a fortune harrassing voters in my district, calling us about 3-4 times a day, stuffing our mailboxes with anti-Thrasher material, conducting fake “surveys” to plant negative phrases about Thrasher, etc.
One thing that people may not know about Thrasher - whom I had never heard of until now, regardless of his past in the legislature - is that he opposed the trial lawyers by working to cap frivolous lawsuits against the state of Florida and has been on their hit-list ever since. So that may be a source of money for his opponent, Quiggle.
I don’t know who I’m going to vote for...I certainly am inclined to favor somebody who favors the Fair Tax, etc., but I haven’t been impressed by Quiggle’s behavior and in fact he hasn’t really offered any ideas about what he wants to do. All he does is attack Thrasher, not even directly, but by implication.
Jeb Bush was very popular here in Florida, btw (Crist is not), and was a good governor, much more conservative than the rest of his family.
Well, if conservatives can’t beat a liberal like Crist in a Republican primary how will we beat both the dims and the Reps in the general by way of third party?
Mr.Rubio is perceived as the Conservative candidate, so Conservatives should get behind his candidacy. At the very least, we are sending Mr.Crist a message, that we are a force in Florida to be reckoned with.

This article covers a wide range of issues asked of Marco and I feel it is well worth the time to read.
Down with the Orange Menace.

This piece is a joke.
Crist has ALL the needed money and will easily win the primary the same way he easily won before.
Crist is a RINO.
He appointed an apparent closet homosexual to fill Mel Martinez’s seat until he gets there.
There is NOBODY with equal money.
There is NOBODY with equal name recognition in the blue zones.
Giving credence to these NOBODY candidates is just a vote split ploy to assue a clear path to the RINO.
stop being suckers for vote splitter candidates.
Conservatives are EASILY divided by idiotic issues like the fair scam tax and other nonsense.
Money is votes.
all crist supporters need do is fund a dead end candidate to split off a few votes.
that does not sound like a “spell”, THAT is a real crisis for a stimulus package...
Thanks,
At this point Rubio is far ahead of any one else I’ve seen.
I’ll say. :-\
So instead of being part of the problem Ace, offer a viable solution.
