Hat tip to Metmom...Ping!
You make wholly unsupported assertions all the time. Your posting history is full of them and when sources are requested of you, you don't provide them either. You do the very thing that you are accusing spirited irish of doing.
You are in no position to cast stones.
Tl's entire point here is to make Paine's rejection a religious issue, that is that he was rejected for being an atheist, not for any other reason.
The simmering resentment against religion and Christianity in particular, is what leads to these kinds of accusations that this is all about a religious litmus test.
It certainly appears that tl would LIKE it to be about rejecting the authority of the traditional Church, although which church that is would be nice to know, because then it would be so easy to hurl slurs and rail against theocracies, bigotry, and intolerance that religion causes, thus providing justification for attacking it.
By couching it in terms of religious persecution, Paine, and other atheists, can then become the modern day martyrs, persecuted for their ideologies, beliefs as it were, by the evil religionists (read Christians).
Certain religions DO tend to produce better or worse governments than others.
Show us one good government that has been established by islam or atheism.
If you really knew your history you would know that of all the religions, any government founded on the Judeo-Christian worldview is far more likely to produce a good government that operates by "consent of the governed". Or rather any government which operates by "consent of the governed" is only likely to work with a Judeo-Christian worldview.
I don’t mean to cause any “Paine” here, but what about the original thesis of the author, that liberalism, in the words of Michael Savage, is a mental disorder? Besides the richness of the intellectual and spiritual history provided by Linda Kimball, I think there is one element missing. We have roughly 100 million citizens walking around in this country who have killed their own child. Should that be a player here? Would that explain some of the guilt, and the spiritual degradation of this generation? There was an organization called Catholics United for Life who coined the phrase “misplaced guilt”. Those who strive to save the Earth are the ones who could not save their own helpless child.
Historically Western Judeo-Christian cultures have produced (eventually) superior forms of government. That's not a carte blance for anyone of Judeo-Christian faith to start claiming that the specific doctrines of their faith have to be codified into law in order to have a government that's consistent with that "worldview".
Nor do I mean to be a “Paine” (loved the pun, btw!), but one of the major themes is ‘demonic nothingness,’ which means death...endless death. Death of soul, mind, reason, life, innocence (ie., babies), beauty, truth, virtue, and creation. Demonic nothingness is at bottom, the pure, unadulterated nothingness of satanic envy, which CS Lewis called ‘that Hideous Strength.” JRR Tolkien depicted it as Sauron’s blasted hell.
If you’ve not watched the DVD, Demographic Winter, which warns that the world is heading toward catastrophe due to abortion, family planning, breakdown of the family, and other issues, then I urge you to watch it. It’s truly the unheard, unreported story of our time. It is also, in my opinion, a precurser to Demonic Nothingness.
By pointing out that Paine was being erroneously portrayed as an atheist. How absolutely insidious of me.
TL can’t point to even one ‘good’ atheistic government since there are nor ever have been any. We could however, point to at least two brutally murderous atheistic totalitarian regimes controlled by those ‘simmering’ with ‘resentment.” Resentment of course, is envy.
You could do lots of things. Pinging people to your misreprentations of their arguments apparently isn't among them.
Doctrines like *Do not steal*? *Do not murder*? *Do not lie*?
All the laws we have on our books have their roots in moral precepts, primarily based on Judeo-Christian principles.
No one here is advocating for a theocracy, which you know full well, but without the moral underpinnings that Judaism and Christianity provide, there will be no civilized society.
Those aren't unique to Christianity, but you knew that when you posted it.
Thanks so much for posting the article. It will be one I print for my teenagers to read.
I think what I see happening, even here on Free Republic, is power of speaking the truth to all comers, and those lurkers who are spoiling for meaningless contention, at some point have to realize that the time for willfull intellectual and spiritual nonsense is over.
Now is the time for mercy. Soon it will be too late. It is so comforting to have access to the Sacrament of Confession. God bless you!
Thanks for the ping!
Did I say they were? Read the post again.
What's your point?
