With this being the end of summer and Congress still on recess, maybe James Taranto was stuck for a topic when he used his Wall Street Journal column to float Dick Cheney's name as a possible Republican candidate to challenge Barack Obama in 2012. Dick Cheney? Take a breath. However unlikely that prospect might seem today, Taranto presents at least one - maybe the single - scenario where a Cheney candidacy might resonate with enough voters to give him a shot at winning the White House.
"If the Bush administration's policies really did keep us safe for 7½ years, then it stands to reason that the Obama administration's policies may be endangering us now. Certainly that is how the public would see it in the event of another terrorist attack. If that happens, heaven forbid, Obama will be seen to have failed in the most basic presidential duty, and the Bush administration will be vindicated. As inconceivable as it may seem today, the 2012 election may end up turning on national security. Republicans would be wise to nominate someone with both toughness and experience. Under such circumstances, it's hard to think of a better candidate--assuming, of course, that he could be persuaded to run--than Richard B. Cheney."

Cheney has a heart problem We need a young conservative to step up and be a donor. Cheney would be the greatest ever and his picture would be next to Reagan on the wall of the Conservative Hall of Fame
C’mon guys, how about it? Anyone...?
Hell .... I’d vote for Cheney twice ..... but I don’t think its in the cards.
I’d like Cheney but his health, not to mention his “baggage” heaped on him from the left, will make regular folk hesitate to put him in office.
We need fresh blood.
I do not see it, and I am sure he would not accept, but
I have always thought he was the smartest guy on the block.
Cheney’s daughter would be a good candidate.
Cheney and a solid young conservative VP like Jindal would be a dream come true.
I don’t think Cheney wants the job, but it would be good “strategery” for him to be out there trading jabs with the communists. He’s pretty tough, and he could inflict some bruises on the opposition while our secret slugger is warming up.
If all he did for the rest of his career was to fight these verbal fights for us his time would be well spent and we would be very well served.

Regular folk are pissed and would vote for Cheney in a heart beat.I’d rather have a conservative adult with a bad ticker in the whitehouse than the rabid commie hell bent on the destruction of this country that is in there now.
Cheney/Palin, Cheney/Jindal, Cheney/Sessions, Cheney/________, the possibilities are endless and it would be a wonderful dream. But I don’t think he wants the office at all.
If he were on the ballot I'd probably vote for him but if it were a Republican primary it would (duh) depend on who else was running and what they had to offer.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Dick Cheney. He's the courageous adult in the room. But we do also need new people coming up through the ranks and there might be some in the wings that are ready to go-go-go...
This would be an even bigger disaster than Bob Dole running on the GOP ticket.
Can’t we actually get a conservative to run? Someone who believes in smaller gov’t????
Me too, but would you give your heart to him, literally?
Agreed.I always thought the wrong guy was on the top of the ticket.Speaks volumns on the power of the rinos in the republican party.Example:Stupid shit that bush tried to ram past us (amnesty and dubai ports)and the stupid shit that he did get past us(dept.of home grown stupidity). We need new people coming up in the ranks er we need new CONSERVATIVE people coming up in the ranks of the republican party.
