BOSTON (Sept. 2) -- Curt Schilling, the former major league pitcher who won the allegiance of Bostonians by leading the Red Sox to the 2004 World Series, said Wednesday that he has "some interest'' in running for the seat held for nearly 50 years by Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. Schilling, a registered independent and longtime Republican supporter, wrote on his blog that while his family and video gaming company, 38 Studios, are high priorities, "I do have some interest in the possibility.'" "That being said, to get to there, from where I am today, many, many things would have to align themselves for that to truly happen,'' he added. [snip]

Anyone from Massachusetts able to shed any light on Schilling's chances if he were to run? I realize this is Massachusetts, but is Schilling idolized sufficiently there that his being an independent/GOPer wouldn't get in his way? This would be a dream pick up for the GOP if we could swing it. Would a stick in the eye of Obama and the Dems that would be if a conservative took Teddy's seat.

He needs to run as an Independent and the Republicans should stay out of the way. There are Democrats who will vote for an Independent over a Republican (sorry).

I live up here, and I think he has a good chance.

He is outspoken, doesn’t mince words much, so he won’t be intimidated.

He is Curt Schilling. Even some lefties will grudgingly cut him about a quarter of an inch of slack, but that is about it.

But without Kennedy IN the seat, I think it could be won. Just my opinion, and I admit to being on shaky ground making political predictions. After all, I never thought in a million years this country would elect someone like Barack Obama.

But look at us now.

No need to apologize. I agree completely. His being an independent would give him some cache with Massachusetts voters. He’d likely caucus with the GOP in the Senate which would be one less seat the Dems would have to break filibusters.

If it doesn’t look good in MA, a lot of us here in Delco would probably love to have him take Joe Sestak’s seat in PA-7...

Republicans stay out of it? I don’t believe that for an instant. Even the republicans up there are liberals.

Man, I wish my Yankees had Curt Schilling on the team in 2001 and 2004 ... we nearly got him too, but not quite. Instead he went to Arizona and tag-teamed with Randy Johnson to deny us of our rightful 27th Championship in 2001 (just after 9/11 even, when NYC needed an uplift), and then wrecked us again with his gutsy performance for the BoSox in 2004 .... HRUMPPPHHH!!

Otherwise, smug arrogant Yankee fan that I am (is there any other type? /grin :) .. Curt Shilling has shown himself to be a principled American citizen, and I would support his running for MA Senator wholeheartedly

Heh, I am not really a big baseball fan myself, but I do find it interesting and fun when the Sox and Yankees play, or when it is the playoffs.

I am more of a football fan...:)

But...knowing how things are, I think that was a great endorsement from a Yankees fan! (As the Aussies like to say in a complimentary way: “Good on ya!”)

Jim Bunning is retiring. It would be nice to have another ace in his place. I much doubt any non-Democrat has a chance in this, but Schilling might keep the margin of defeat respectable and might seed some conservative gains there in a generation. His efforts might even blunt the ‘win healthcare for Ted’ message.

That's what MA needs- ‘a principled American’

I hope he brings his bloody sock to the Senate with him to show some of the RINOs what it takes to have some guts.
