The Duggers and Overpopulation
Post Scripts ^ | 9/2/09 | OneVike

The news is out that Jim Bob and Michelle Dugger are having another child, their 19th. Yes you read correctly, 19 children and their oldest son's wife is expecting their first child. Let us all pray that he follows in his parents footsteps, by having as many children and being as prosperous as his parents. I have heard many people ask the question, "Are they keeping up the household without being on the government dole?" The answer to that question would be that they have never received a dime of taxpayer's money. That is not how they operate. In fact the Duggers run a their own ,business which teaches people how to budget and save by buying only what you can afford among other businesses they own and operate. They built their own home themselves, and had it paid for before it was finished. Right about now many liberals are screaming that the world is already overpopulated and this couple are just adding to the problem. Overpopulated? Is it really?

When it comes to having children, most Christians understand that the Lord opens and closes a woman's womb, and it has been that way from the beginning of time. However, mankind has tried to control that which God said is in His control. The first commandment given to man was, “Be fruitful and multiply Gen 1:22”, and He re-iterated that command again after the Flood when he told Noah, “Be fruitful and multiply Gen 9:7”. Try as I may, I have yet to find any passages where God rescinded that command. What He does tell us, is that if we put our faith in Him, He will supply our needs. Something the Duggers have proved time and time again.

As long as the taxpayer doesn’t have to pay for them, they can have a hundred. This is not China.

How big is your garden?

Also, there are constant advances in agriculture that produce tremendously higher yields decade after decade. Hydroponics shows just how little is needed to grow a food plant. I have no doubt that someday someone will be growing steak from stem cells in a giant cube. Overpopulation is a myth. The world has a distribution problem due to corrupt governments, not a production problem.

P.s. If you have any pets I suggest you kill them so we can use the precious resources they take up to feed a human.

I always wonder why people I’ve talked to seem to hate these people. Even “Christians”. Who cares that they’re expecting #19? Obviously they’re doing a phenomenal job raising their children to be real Christians. They’re well-behaved, respectful and all good looking (if that matters). God has blessed this family with many things, one being a clue another being debt free..... We could all learn something from them.

Amen. The Duggars are an inspiration. I am baffled by all of the criticism aimed at them.

I think it’s because many parents today are selfish—self-centered—and are spoiled. I’m glad my sons are good parents. Their father was an alcoholic and that spoiled a lot of family times. One young man lives with my son and his family because his parents don’t want him. He had some problems with drugs and stuff early on but he seems to have straightened out. I hope he can get back with one of them soon. It hurts me to see kids shoveled around from pillar to post. That’s why it’s great to see families like the Duggers. And YOU.

It's not just a question of square feet. Where is all the water and food going to come from for all those people? What about sanitation, garbage, and sewage?

Just look at the infrastructure of a place like New York City, which has eight and a half million people. The enormous and enormously complex infrastructure is necessary for all crowded urban areas around the globe.

You can't just count square feet or look out of an airplane window and say, Look at all the land.

I too wish that everyone could have all the babies they want with no worries about all of this. But wishful thinking has never been one of my strong suits.

Also, it’s not about the Duggers. I’m sure they are a wonderful family. And it’s not about illegitimacy or who ends up paying. It really only has to do with planetary common sense. Hate to sound like Al Gore, but there it is.

My decision to stop at two was for health and medical reasons. Not that it’s any of your business—just addressing your judgmental attitude. What is it the good book says about that subject? “Judge not that ye be....not judged?”

My brother and his wife both suffer from fertility issues and have been unable to have children of their own. They have chosen not to do anything medically invasive and have tried to adopt domestically and that has also been discouraging.

I personally think that family size is no one's business unless it's being subsidized by taxpayers.

And it is one of the reasons why civilized civilization is eroding. When the most productive don’t reproduce disaster can only be the result.

Trusting God only when in church seems the going trend. I told my wife that. She didn’t like it but the test of a believer is not in how convenient the belief is. Her Grandmother’s Liver recovered, her kidneys recovered, and she is back from death’s door and on half the medication. Prayer is powerful. Trusting God is just that it isn’t penciling him in. Faith is certainty in the righteousness in that which is yet to come.

I feel badly for those who are not monks and choose to not have families. It is a great act of faithlessness and selfishness and a sign of stunted maturation.

Have you ever flown coast to coast across this country? (That is a rhetorical you) It is empty. Look down from that plane.

THat is exactly what I thought, the first time I flew more than 50 years ago. I was a new convert to Catholicism and I was flying to my own wedding. My parents did not approve, so they were opting out, providing a lame excuse although they paid for the wedding. My new MIL was dying of cancer, so we moved the ceremony to where she was living instead of having it in my own town.

But I looked down at all that space and thought there is plenty of room in this country that hasn't even been touched yet.

I wasn't as prolific as Michelle Dugger, but 4 kids and 11 grandkids later, and I have a very nice family.

I am not a Christian, and think the Duggers should be proud of their beautiful family.

Do what you can and demonstrate to the rest of us how you can live off your garden plot, and do so for at least a year.

Then, we will have something to talk about.

One cannot have a problem with overpopulation unless one is comfortable with the possibility of billions dying for every seasonal natural disaster.

If you use up the entire planet to grow food, population will keep up with it, and vice-versa. That will ensure that a disaster even in one regional growing area will have serious repercussions in terms of the number of people suddenly going without food.

You are correct. Many industrialized countries (Italy, Russia, Japan, etc..) are well below replacement levels.
