Reacting to worries about potential severe floods this fall associated with a damaged dam, The King County Council on Monday voted to give Executive Kurt Triplett the ability to declare an emergency before floodwaters cause trouble.
"Thousands of homes and businesses may be devastated by potential flooding resulting from the Howard Hanson Dam," said Councilmember Julia Patterson. "By authorizing an emergency proclamation before flooding occurs, this legislation moves the County forward in our flood preparation and sends a message to the federal government that we need their support now."

Kent, Auburn, Tukwila residents!!!!!
I just saw on the news a spokesman for the Army corp of engineers. He said "the dam will not hold large volumes of water..."
They are planning on starting to move some of the King county administrative offices asap, before this winter season!!!
Warning!!! Warning!!!
The announcement by the Army corp basically means that for all intents and purposes, THERE IS NO HOWARD HANSON DAM, THEY WILL BR FORCED TO LEAVE THE FLOODGATES WIDE OPEN!!!
THERE ARE SERIOUS CONCERNS THAT WATER LEVELS IN THE VALLEY COULD REACH FOUR FEET DEEP OR MORE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS!!!
On the other side of the coin, though, the steelheading this year down there might be excellent!!!
Is this the same federal govt that cannot even pull off the dollars for cars debacle?
Good luck, King county.
You’re dealing with loons.
Where is FEMA....this is racism.
Well, you have two entities. The clowns in Congress.
But you also have the Army Corp of Engineers, probably the best and most accomplished civil engineering group in the world...
When they tell you whats up, they know what they’re talking about.
ping...
This comes as no surprise to people in this area. The dam has had issues in the past and needs to be fixed in order to prevent flooding downstream. The poster indicating that the Army Corp of Engineers should be listened to is probably right in this case. Thanks for your concern.
Well, it’s no surprise to me, I used to live in the valley in Kent near the golf course.
And I’ve seen the river almost above the levees, but they were able to carefully regulate the flow.
Not now. If that puppy goes, and I’m 99% sure it will, they can line up trucks with sandbags up and down I-5 for two hundred miles and it won’t make a DAM bit of difference!
Realistically, if I lived in the valley and had the means, I’d get out NOW!!
I’m up near Lake Tapps at 500 feet or so now, so I’m not worried. Anybody know if there are any major telecom/power station switching stations down there?
And here I am sitting directly downstream from the dam... in Auburn.
Eyes must be getting bad.
Well, I have three words of advice.
Buy a boat!
Seriously.
I know about where you are, I used to do alot of steelheading and King and Silver fishing at the big bend there at the far east end of Main Street. As you walk along the river there, you can see the tons and tons of rock they dumped to make the levees.
I doubt it would give right there, but it doesn’t matter, because the whole valley going up towards Flaming Geyser park would be inundated and washed out.
And all that mud and sludge is GONNA end up somewheres!!
Actually, I am in a local airplane plant right below you... if you catch my drift. I live in Burien.
Boeing Auburn plant - gone.
Boeing Kent plant - gone.
Boeing itself - gone to SC.
Southcenter will reopen it’s new “U-fish” trout ponds next week!!
Think about it. That river HAS NOT BEEN ALLOWED to flow freely for OVER FORTY YEARS!!
I’ve hiked alot of the Green River Gorge between Black Diamond and Flaming Geyser (incidentally, one of the most dangerous Cat 5 whitewater rafting routes in the country) and can tell you there are literally tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of cubic yards of junk just waiting... Mud, rocks, stumps, hell, houses and farms, you name it!!
I CANNOT underplay or minimize the seriousness of this thread!

Say WA? Evergreen State ping

FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.
Ping sionnsar if you see a Washington state related thread.
......When they tell you whats up, they know what theyre talking about......
They said what Obama directed them to say. He would not allow such an announcement without prior clearance.
Barack 0bama doesn't care about pasty, white people.
Flaming Geezer has a cat5? I didn’t know that.
The mall in Tukwila was predicted to have some 8 feet of water in it.
I recommend pinging any and all Washington FReepers you think might be affected.
BTW, if you know anyone who has a canoe for sale cheap, I might be interested!
