Democrats and the Decline of Manufacturing in America
Pajamas Media ^ | Sept. 2 | Jeff Pope

Posted on 09/02/2009 11:42:24 AM PDT by AJKauf

We have heard it for so long that most people assume it is true: the Democratic Party is the party of the working man, the hard-working blue-collar guy, the primary beneficiary of the manufacturing economy. Nonsense.

The reality is the Democratic Party is both a potent political force in the demise of the manufacturing sector and a primary factor obstructing any type of resurgence. The party has been controlled for decades by forces that in fact are destructive to that most American of enterprises, manufacturing.

The rhetoric coming from the party is certainly not representative of their true role. Their demons are, of course, the evil corporations that move plants overseas just to make more evil profit. Then there are more demons running unfair trading partners, the ones that act in deliberately predatory ways that take unfair advantage of the justly deserved high wages of the noble American worker. And all these demons work together under a master plan run by shadowy secret business/political organizations. Villains everywhere with only the Democrats and their friends actually working hard on the workers’ behalf. Despite some elements of truth, this propaganda has been remarkably effective in keeping voting blocks intact despite years of steady decline in manufacturing jobs. While the Democrats pronounce their fealty to the “working man,” they, possibly more than any other group in the last 20 years, have been responsible for the toxic environment that has so advanced the decline of manufacturing in America....

Sorry, both Parties are to blame.
The "USA is becoming a service economy" mantra was chanted for the last 30 years.

Now its coming home to roost.

Buy American sounds better all the time. Put our people back to work by looking for items that are made by Americans.

The Democrat Party is a toxic cocktail that Americans should stay away from!

An absolutely great article!

If you have liberal/democratic friends or relatives you might want to pass it on to them.

I said the same things myself (though not as well) about the damage the Democrats were doing to our industrial base. Most people simply cannot grasp the significance of their action.

There are still many Union idiots in the Trades and Manufacturing sectors that vote democratic and support the Democrats. What fools.

Completely agree.

And the American people are mainly to blame for letting the scoundrels and sociopaths on Capitol Hill get away with it it for these many years. Democrats AND Republicans. All of them.

Now they are completely out of control on Capitol Hill, and they are laughing at the American people.

Yes it could be said that both parties are to blame but a far greater amount of the blame goes to the Democrats. I will put my own estimate of about 85% to 15%. This is a real guesstimate but it's something close. Sometimes when somebody says both are at fault, it will be interpreted as a 50%- 50% proposition. This needs to be clarified.

Mr. Pope is entirely correct in saying what he says in this article but the biggest factor involved in driving our manufacturing offshore has been and is our idiotic, communist inspired, income tax code! The surest, and likely only, way back is to throw that monstrosity onto the ash heap of history were it properly belongs and implement a system more befitting of a FREE society!!

Enviro-nazis hate manufacturing, construction, and agriculture, which employ very low numbers of pseudo-intellectual elitist academic marxists. They like nothing better than to shut down these activities using fraudulent enviro-nazi EPA requirements. After all, the people affected are, in the minds of the elitists, low-quality expendables.

That’s fine, it’s your decision and I see nothing wrong with it, but....if you can buy products that are made here, that fit your needs, then we can help each other.

"Buy American sounds better all the time. Put our people back to work by looking for items that are made by Americans."

Idiotic thinking that is toxic to millions of American jobs. Most of the goods we manufacture here or import to trade are exports.

By American also start Buy Canadian, Buy UK, By European, BUY Japanese etc. policies everywhere else, and the result is net, and massive job loss.

America began, and has always prospered by being the largest trading country in the world. That's why we have the largest number of shipping ports in the world.

However, if you think we'd be better off as a closed society, making and selling goods only for the 300 million people living here, and think that will keep you living in the only style you've ever known, you're dead wrong.

What we'd become is a western Soviet Union.

The Sheeple don’t care what the truth is. They’ve voted Democrat since great great grandpa got help from FDR and they’ll vote for a yellow dog if he’s a Democrat.

They’re mentally ill with . . . Democratitis. Democrat Derangement Syndrome.

“Idiotic thinking”? I’m glad you are open for discussion without calling names. Buy what you want, when and where you want. I prefer to buy items that I know will increase jobs for our people. If we continue to buy from Chinese manufacturers, we may as well close all of our plants. People aren’t going to stop buying products from over seas, but we can help our own as much as possible. Have a good day and I hope you don’t enter all conversations with name calling.

It is idiotic thinking. I call it what it is.

Its simple minded thinking that shows you haven’t the slightest concept of how trade works.

Idiotic thinking also takes another form.

Some embrace the idea that its *impossible* for sphere “A” prosper by building it’s our own products and reasonably protecting it’s market through tariffs. (try selling rice, or US cars in Japan)
Trade isnt bad, when held to encouraging the import of things “sphere A” cannot produce just as well, such as Saudi Arabia importing lumber, or niche specialty products, swiss watches, etc.

Somehow, the free traders are certain such an economy is doomed to failure. Yet, magically, when group “A” is merely changed into a larger group, It is magic, and prosperity flows.
Worldwide, the same realities exist. There is nothing magic about trading across the globe, as opposed to across a continent. The belief that its different,,,, is idiotic thinking.

I know how trade works...don’t assume. I have my own company and sell around the world. If times were good, you had all the money you need, companies were doing great....no problem. But if this country falls, it won’t do anyone any good. Pick ourselves up first, then we can help pick others up. You can’t do both at the same time. One thing I do not do is sell cheaper to other countries and charge the higher prices to our own people.

The is a fundamental disconnect between the number of manufacturing “jobs” versus the manufacturing output overtime. They’ve been moving in the opposite directions for many moons. Gotta love that productivity.
