DES MOINES Governor Chet Culver issued the following statement tonight, congratulating Democrat Curt Hanson on his victory in the House District 90 special election:
Lieutenant Governor Judge and I want to congratulate Curt Hanson on his win tonight, and we look forward to working with him in the legislature in 2010. We also want to recognize Stephen Burgmeier and his local supporters for running a strong campaign.

Oh well, at least Hanson didn't win by much. Gives me hope for 2010.

Dunno much about Iowa politics, but it seems that if the GOP can’t win in this environment they never will.
FUCC
That the GOP couldn’t get its voters to the polls for this opportunity to improve the balance DOESN’T give me hope.More like a fear that people just don’t care anymore,or have accepted defeat without even battling.
That's exactly what takes away any hope I had for 2010. These close races, always Dems who win, are beyond suspicious but especially with the Dems now, in this environment. God help us.
Close vote — margin of victory is less than 100 votes. How do we know it was a fair election?
“Close vote margin of victory is less than 100 votes. How do we know it was a fair election?”
Better question is ...why haven’t the Pubbies appealed for a recount?
I really do not like the way we pick our presidential candidates. I would trash the electoral college system if we replaced it with a system where a winning candidate must receive 50% plus 1 vote in order to win. If no candidate received a majority, then there would be a runoff between the top two, regardless of party.
Democrats also appeared to have an overwhelming lead in returned absentee ballots. As of mid-today, the Iowa Secretary of States office had received 1,731 absentee ballots from Democrats, compared to 747 from Republicans and 341 other- or no-party voters.
Republicans were outhustled in a democrat district and still almost won.
Good news and bad news there.
The electoral college serves to balance the votes of large and small states, giving the same relative representation in presidential elections as the states have in the House and Senate. The Electoral College is an important part of our Constitution.
Get rid of the electoral college and the massive vote fraud in states like Illinois will have even more impact in presidential politics.

Someone said the Republican lost by 100 votes or so. If so, I’d demand an accounting of the absentee ballots given the huge number returned by Democrats. It’s highly likely more than 100 of them are fraudulent, if past Democratic behavior in elections is any indication. And yes, was ACORN involved?
You do not understand the Constitution or the meaning of a representative republic if you want to get rid of the electoral college.
Go study and learn then you opinion will mean something
I think this election was for the State House of Representatives, not the U.S. Congress. There were less than eight thousand votes total so a 100 vote margin would be almost impossible to overcome in a recount.
Aw heck...it was just an election to a state office, not Congress....not worth stealing....forget my last post.
No, I understand it completely. Originally there were only 65 representatives and 26 senators, making a 5:2 ratio in the electoral college. This gives a big advantage to highly populated, small states and dilutes the power of the lowly populated, large states giving a 4.4:1 ratio. This advantage remains out of whack even if the high population states have a low turnout and the low population states have an exceptionally high turnout. This also discourages third parties by essentially locking them out of the process because under the EC, third parties act only as spoilers. The census determines how many representatives each state has. This INCLUDES ILLEGAL ALIENS. Currently California, Texas, New York, and Florida have a combined total of about 20-30 representatives BASED ON THE ILLEGAL ALIEN POPULATION. This gives them ANOTHER unfair advantage in selecting the POTUS.
You have missed the point completely.
The effort is to make sure that oh say three large population areas NYC, LA, Chicago ( and maybe you need a couple of more but not many) don’t swamp the interests of the ENTIRE country. If popular votes is all that is needed then say hello to Pres Gore. The term fly over sttes exists for a reason. The founders wanted to make sure that the interests of ALL the people would be represented not just a few elite groups
Moreover, in the past ILLEGALS have NOT been considered as part of the census. It is only with this new COMMUNIST government in place that that is coming about. If you want real tyranny then go for popular vote when you have that many illegals voting
And you miss that the large population state ALREADY skew the outcome. If a candidate carries just California, Illinois, and New York, they are already over third of the way to getting 270 EC votes. And since both states are predominately Rat states, Republicans don’t turn out to vote feeling that they are wasting their time.
And, yes, illegal aliens ARE counted if the census workers can find them. I predict that the zero will again try to use sampling to estimate the number of illegals in order to increase the representation of states with high illegal alien populations.
I also have a plan for Illinois to secede from Chicago, New York from NYC and Long Island, Pennsylvania from Philadelphia, Oregon from Portland, and Washington from the Seattle area. Five new states and 10 new (hopefully) conservative senators.
so you want to make it better by gutting the Constitution?
great logic
