I just thought I'd set the record straight.

I don't know one way or the other, but...there is a old recruiting poster on the wall in the Marine area on the E-ring in the Pentagon showing a bull dog chasing a wiener dog (wearing a WWI German Helmet)...it says the Germans called the Marines Devil Dogs. FWIW.

I was on Saipan in 1971? 72?. There were rusting tanks about 50 yards off shore and we were warned not to touch any ordinance lying on the beach or off the beaten trail.

Lot of weird Peace Corps types hanging around.

Best regards,

Well, regardless of where the nickname, Tuefel Hunden, came from truthguy...if you ever had to go up against a Devil Dog, you would realize that it's a quite appropriate moniker.

I just thought I'd set the record straight.

Okay I've found the information. I read this several years ago so I didn't have it at hand and I have to go out and find it. Here goes the real story: (enjoy and God Bless our Marines.

Yes and I just stated that I'm a fan of the Marines as my uncle was a Marine as well as my brother in law.

See my previous post from strategy page about the origin of the devil dog.

This article should set the record straight.

You would enjoy BREAKOUT by Martin Russ. It’s the story of the Chosin Marines told up close and personal. It never stays long on the shelf.

My study subject last winter was the Solomin islands campaign. Guadal Canal was where it began.

As I read I used Google Earth to find all the battlefields and especially the airfields and strong holds as the battle progressed northward. It took nearly 2 years.

The location of Henderson Field and the other two American air strips is now a booming little town. The river where so many died runs right through the middle of the town. What was once jungle and feaverous riverside is now asphalt and container wharf.
