MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - He's loved or loathed by millions and he's coming to Western Washington soon to receive the key to the city from his hometown.
He is Fox Newschannel's Glenn Beck, who hails from Mount Vernon. The conservative commentator is both popular and polarizing. So, it's no surprise his impending accolades aren't sitting well with everyone.
Beck is no stranger to controversy, including recent comments referring to President Obama as a racist, saying the president has exposed himself as a person with a "deep-seeded hatred for white people or the white culture."
Millions tune into watch and listen to Beck, including Mount Vernons mayor.
"I've chosen to give him the key to the city and proclaim September 26 Glenn Beck Day," says Mayor Bud Norris.
The Young Democrats of Skagit County have a problem with that.
"That success is built off a lot of ridiculous and hateful and divisive language. We feel that as a non-partisan position, the mayor should not be endorsing that at all," says YDSD President Marc Oommen.
The mayor disagrees and says his decision to recognize Beck isn't partisan at all, given Beck has never formally declared his party affiliation.
"It's probably a judgment call and that's my prerogative. In general, I agree with Glenn Beck's delivery and everything, I enjoy watching him, said Norris.
Protesters are circulating a petition hoping to change the mayor's mind or, at the very least, force a vote on it by the city council.
"I don't think Glenn Beck is very good in terms of trying to represent the entirety of Mount Vernon and I really don't think we should be celebrating his success, says Oommen.
For now, Beck is scheduled to come to Seattle to receive his award on September 26. Protesters plan to be there, too
Washington State Ping

Sorry -- was already on it!
Way to go Glenn! You just ignore those pesky little protesters!
God Bless Glenn Beck, an American hero.
Not to mention there is (still) a right to free speech in the country.
I’m not a big Beck fan (too whiny for my tastes) but I toast his success.
We Surround Them
Seattle, no thanks, but I may attend the visit in Mount Vernon. Too bad it’s not tulip season.
Circulating a petition. How original and unexpected.
I don’t have cable, but I listen to him on radio every other day. I alternate between him and Laura Ingraham.
In case you’re not on dial-up.....

ping!
Why would he go to Seattle (where he'll be hated) to recieve an award from Mt. Vernon (where he will very certainly receive a hero's welcome)?
There's more parking available at our TEA Party site in MV than anywhere in Seattle, and it's FREE, like the overwhelming majority of people who live in Skagit and surrounding counties.
I just got some more info - Glenn is going to receive the award at Safeco Field, and there’s going to be a bus taking people down there. Then he’s coming up to McIntyre Hall in Mt. Vernon, on College Way. I’ll get more info on times, phone hit a dead zone.
