The federal government will pay about $9.5 million to acquire land so the Flight 93 National Memorial can be built by the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Monday.
With the National Park Service reaching agreements with eight landowners, construction is expected to start in November, Salazar said.
Salazar called the site where the plane crashed, near Shanksville in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, hallowed ground and said the nation was "eternally grateful for the heroes of Flight 93."
United Flight 93 was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was diverted by hijackers with the likely goal of crashing it into the White House or Capitol. The official 9/11 Commission report said the hijackers crashed the plane as passengers tried to wrest control of the cockpit.
All 33 passengers and seven crew members died.
The agreements cover nearly 1,400 acres and include the actual impact site. That site sits on a 275-acre parcel owned by quarry business Svonavec Inc. The company and the government agreed in January to allow a court to decide the property's worth.

I still think the proper memorial should have been a mile in diameter of glassified desert/mountain in Afghanistan.
Last I heard they were.
Better go see the makeshift memorial while you still can. The lifeguard station from Chincoteague Island is very poignant. I wonder if the three bibles found in the ashes, the only things that survived the crash besides a 2x2 foot piece of aluminum skin, will be put on display at the official memorial?
Will it be dedicated to community organizing like the actually 9-11 date?
Be sure to bring along a koran and a full bladder.
Bump!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the White Paper put out by the National Park Service about these allegations.
My father was on Flight 93 - his name was Patrick “Joe” Driscoll. I am not some poser - I am his son. If you’re going to make such comments all I ask is you please take a few minutes to educate yourself.
If even after reading this you do not change your position then we’ll simply agree to disagree. But I sincerely hope this will inform you of what is happening at the monument for the passengers and crew of Flight 93.
Page 2 is of particular interest.

Thanks for the link. Very informative. Are you satisifed with the concept and approach to this memorial?
You’re welcome Fester! And yes, I am very satisfied with it.
I’ve been to the crash site numerous times and the landscape form is as described in the White Paper.
People will simply see what they want to see...that is why I want them educated. It is a beautiful and peaceful field - very fitting for a memorial.
I would rather it not be tarnished due to people jumping to conclusions. Especially if they’ve never even been there.

“Commission report said the hijackers crashed the plane as passengers tried to wrest control of the cockpit. “
No disrespect to the passengers or crew but they weren’t responsible for the left engine being found 3.5 miles back in the flight path and the right engine being found 1.5 miles back in the flight path before impact. Forcing a jet over into a dive would put the engines at the same site as the impact.
Nope - there’s another soul somewhere that will never be comforted enough.
My condolences to you and other surviving families. The passengers were true heroes and represented America's first response to the islamic attacks.
That said, are there any drawings of the final design?
Winged1,
No disrespect to you but please know what the hell you’re talking about before posting such crap. My father’s flight was not shot down.

‘Sorry you feel that way and have to revert to name calling but it’s published fact as to where the engines were finally found. Just fact. Like I said, no disrespect intended. There’s no devise onboard to jetison engines.
Care to put a link on that published “fact”.
Credible sources only please.
