I.F. Stone, Soviet Agent—Case Closed
Commentary ^ | May 2009 | Harvey Klehr, John Earl Haynes and Alexander Vassiliev

Posted on 09/01/2009 9:42:22 AM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

When new information about Americans who had cooperated with the Soviet KGB began to emerge in the 1990s, no individual case generated as much controversy as that of the journalist I.F. Stone, who had long been installed in the pantheon of left-wing heroes as a symbol of rectitude and a teller of truth to power before his death in 1989. Charges about Stone’s connections with the KGB have been swirling about for more than a decade, prompting cries of outrage among his passionate followers. Until now, the evidence was equivocal and subject to different interpretations. No longer.

In the early 1990s, one of us—Alexander Vassiliev, a former KGB officer turned Russian journalist—was given authorized access to the files of the SVR (the successor spy agency to the KGB in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union) to pursue research for a book that was eventually published in 1998 under the title The Haunted Wood.1 By the time of publication, Vassiliev, fearing retribution from hard-line Communists and nationalists angered by revelations of secrets, had moved permanently to Great Britain. He left his original notebooks, containing more than 1,100 pages of detailed notes and lengthy quotations, with friends in Moscow. They were filled with details about people and issues that did not fit the parameters of The Haunted Wood or whose significance Vassiliev did not then realize.

Retrieved by Vassiliev in 2002, the notebooks offer the most complete look at Soviet espionage in America we have yet had or will obtain until the likely far-off day when Russian authorities open the KGB’s archives for independent research, eclipsing even the several thousand KGB cables partially decoded by the U.S. National Security Agency in the Venona project and released in 1995.

Let him join the ranks of other notorious traitors as well including Ted Kennedy (read today’s Investor’s Business Daily), Alger Hiss, Julius Rosenberg, and Harry Dexter White. These were the real villians of the Cold War and the real heroes were Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, and Whittaker Chambers for exposing them. A little history you won’t get in our public schools or the MSM.

And let us not forget the American chekist, Harry Hopkins, trusted advisor to FDR, whom Iskhak Akhmerov, the controller of Soviet intelligence in America during WWII, called the "most important of all Soviet wartime agents in the US."

This was reported by KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky, and mentioned in "The Forsaken: An American Tragedy in Stalin's Russia."

When I was in a journalism class in college in the mid-70s, the professor scheduled a field trip so we could roam the countryside and write articles about our adventures. The class stayed in a cabin and one night the professor rolled out a projector and made us sit through a film (yes, a film) about I.F. Stone. We were supposed to think how cool he was and how rotten the U.S. was. I’ll admit I sort of fell for it.

Then a few years later Reagan took office and I was cured.

Now that he has been confirmed as a Soviet spy I’m sure that Obama will see to it that he receives a Posthumus Presidental Medal of Freedom.

Eric Alterman authored this also:

What Liberal Media?

*****************************EXCERPT******************************

What Liberal Media? confronts the question of liberal bias and, in so doing, provides a sharp and utterly convincing assessment of the realities of political bias in the news. In distinct contrast to the conclusions reached by Ann Coulter, Bernard Goldberg, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly, Alterman finds the media to be, on the whole, far more conservative than liberal, though it is possible to find evidence for both views. The fact that conservatives howl so much louder and more effectively than liberals is one significant reason that big media is always on its guard for “liberal” bias but gives conservative bias a free pass.

Hell, the leftists are still claiming Alger Hiss was not an agent as well. Facts, legal findings, evidence, convictions, confessions, written historical records and any other testimony and hard evidence be damned, the liberal mythology has to be taken as gospel — the only religion they allow.

Of the four journalists listed, “Ide”/Samuel Krafsur and “Grin”/John Spivak were unambiguously KGB agents. However, “Bumblebee” was not. He was none other than Walter Lippmann, the most prominent opinion columnist of the day. Lippmann knew Pravdin only as a Soviet journalist with whom he traded insights and information.

Wow. Left wing press bias isn't just a herd mentality, prominent "journalists" were on the KGB payroll fer chrissakes.

Thanks for the ping. I believe that many American journalists were/are Communist agents and many more were/are fellow travelers.
