The Obama Slide
New York Times ^ | August 31, 2009 | David Brooks

Posted on 09/01/2009 5:40:44 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Two tides swept over American politics last winter. The first was the Obama tide. Barack Obama came into office with an impressive 70 percent approval rating. The second was the independent tide. Over the first months of this year, the number of people who called themselves either Democrats or Republicans declined, while the number who called themselves independents surged ahead.

Obama’s challenge was to push his agenda through a Democratic-controlled government while retaining the affection of the 39 percent of Americans in the middle.

The administration hasn’t been able to pull it off. From the stimulus to health care, it has joined itself at the hip to the liberal leadership in Congress. The White House has failed to veto measures, like the pork-laden omnibus spending bill, that would have demonstrated independence and fiscal restraint. By force of circumstances and by design, the president has promoted one policy after another that increases spending and centralizes power in Washington.

...

Amazingly, some liberals are now lashing out at Obama because the entire country doesn’t agree with The Huffington Post. Some now argue that the administration should just ignore the ignorant masses and ram health care through using reconciliation, the legislative maneuver that would reduce the need for moderate votes.

This would be suicidal. You can’t pass the most important domestic reform in a generation when the majority of voters think you are on the wrong path. To do so would be a sign of unmitigated arrogance. If Obama agrees to use reconciliation, he will permanently affix himself to the liberal wing of his party and permanently alienate independents. He will be president of 35 percent of the country — and good luck getting anything done after that.

David Brooks is good at explaining political trends once they are obvious. When Obama was polling well, Brooks was a sycophant.

Maybe the independents and the “white guilt” people are coming to the conclusion that they don’t want to live under a Marxist regime.

Perhaps a little bit more than that, Brooks was actually an early cheerleader for Zer0, based initially (according to Brooks himself) on the “crease in his pant leg.”

Ahem.

He’s dimwitted. He buys into the false premise that all independents are moderates. Many conservatives now label themselves independent because the GOP abandoned conservatism the lasr 10 years.

No, to do so would be yet another sign of Obama's hubris.

The ancients knew that hubris never went unpunished. So it will be with The One.

Well, if Obama came into office with an approval rating of 70%, but he couldn’t hold it because he couldn’t hold the 39% in the middle due to his radical ideas, he really didn’t have 70% support, did he?

The tide has turned into an undertow and is going to pull all the liberals out to sea in 2010!

Brooks is a dummy. Obama was always "affixed" to the liberal wing of his party. He was rated the most liberal senator in Congress. Obama is not a victim who is being drawn to the left. Obama is a Marxist.

FTA:

Events have pushed Barack Obama off to the left.

What a completely blind, Obama ass sucking fool. All he had to do was actually read what was publicly available about the Illegal Alien to know the Illegal Alien was an anti-American communist and secret Mudslime; every voluntary association of the Illegal Alien's showed it. Seldom have I seen such an expression of total, abysmal ignorance by a supposedly "intelligent" man; after all, he does write for the New York Times, America's "Paper of Record," that publishes "all the news that's fit to print." (sarc. off)

The point he is trying to make is that most of the people in the middle to center left (like my parents) still believe 0bama is a moderate.

My parents still to this day believe that he is a moderate. They are blaming everything currently on those evil libs in congress.... ROFL

Which doesn't bode well for the libs in congress in 2010.

But if people like my parents turn on 0bama and start to think he is actually a liberal... that would doom his chances in 2012.
