Obama not smooth on Gdansk: German attack that started World War II marked without him
Washington Times ^ | 09/01/2009 | Helle Dale

What is the good will of a loyal allied country worth to the Obama administration? We are talking about a European nation that has stood by the United States in solidarity as few have since Sept. 11, 2001 -- one with 2,000 troops in Afghanistan and a possible willingness to step up to commit more troops at a time when others want to pull out.

The answer, very unfortunately, seems to be that relations with trusted allies are taken for granted in Washington these days. On diplomacy with Europe, the Obama administration has a terrible tin ear. Nowhere was this more evident than in the shabby treatment accorded Poland, which the administration has sought to remedy.

The Polish 70th anniversary commemorations of the beginning of World War II take place in Gdansk today. This unfortunately involves the latest in a long series of U.S. snubs felt keenly in Poland...

The Polish government sent out the invitation three months ago to the White House, but an answer was received only on Wednesday, a mere five days before the ceremony. Repeated attempts over the summer by the Poles to contact the White House and the State Department met with a long period of silence. One White House aide actually replied that everyone was on vacation until after Labor Day, which caused a Polish official to say he apologized that Adolf Hitler had invaded his country on Sept. 1.

Chicago has quite a large Polish population and they don’t get along very well with the Rev Wright supporters.

“”Enigma”
On July 25, 1939, before the war began, the Polish intelligence (Section 2 of the General Staff) provided Great Britain and France with one copy each (with necessary documents) of the German coding machine “Enigma” that allowed to read the secret German messages. A team of Polish cryptologists was evacuated to France, later on to England, where a special center for monitoring and decoding was organized in Bletchley Park. The Polish “Enigma” played a significant role, especially during the Battle of Britain, Battle of the Atlantic and the invasion of the continent in 1944. Other Polish scientists and technicians evacuated to England have to be mentioned as well. The electronics specialists helped with creating the submarine detection system (HFDF – High Frequency Direction Finding). The Polish engineers constructed the reversible tank periscope and an anti-aircraft cannon, with tens of thousands of which the British troops were equipped.”

“”2,944 pilots took part in the historic Battle of Britain, of whom 497 lost their lives. Amongst them there were 145 Polish pilots, of whom 32 were killed. The RAF and allied pilots shot down 1,733 German aircraft and the Luftwaffe shot down 915 British fighters. 203 German aircraft were shot by the Polish pilots. In September, during the highest intensity of German attacks, 13% of Polish pilots in frontline squadrons were Poles, and in October, because of the RAF loses, the proportion went up to 20%.
According to Air Chief Marshall Hugh Dowding, AOC Fighter Command of RAF: “(…) all (Polish) squadrons swung into the fight with a dash and enthusiasm which is beyond praise. (…) The first Polish squadron (303) (…) during the course of one month shot down more Germans than any other British unit in the same period. Other Poles (…) were used (…) in British squadrons, but (…) they were probably most efficient employed in their own national units.”””

My (limited) understanding is that the Poles likely have our backs even more so than England, at least for right now.

I've got a couple of co-workers that spend time in Poland...they say that Americans are well-liked there.

My Dad, somewhere in his vast military library, has a picture circa 1939 of Polish horse calvary charging German tanks. Armed only with lances.

Not kidding. They used what they had.

Anyone who says that the Poles weren't ballsy is lying. Were they a little better equipped, the history of the world might be a bit different. Giving Hitler a bloody nose in '39 might have made him think twice, later.

I had a Admin Chief in the service, back in the 70’s, who was Polish, who said me the Poles on horseback were charging the German tanks with dynamite charges strapped to the end of lances. They were trying to wedge the dynamite under the turrets to immobilize them.

(it must have been a sight to see... those brave soldiers riding atop those charging horses... with those hugh balls.)

Sorry guys to say that, but this is some kind of hutzpah - all that stuff related to Poles allegedly charging German tanks on horseback.
That was an element of German propaganda - trying to make fun of "pathetic" Polish resistance.

In fact - Polish cavalry troops fought as a mobile mounted infantry and had some successes against the German forces. But they did not charged tanks.

That myth was created afther the Battle of Krojanty
