Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced Monday that the special election to fill the Sen. Edward Kennedy's seat will be held in January, but said he wants to make an interim appointment before then.
Patrick set the general election for Jan. 19. A source close to the proceeding said the primary will be held Dec. 8. Under state law, the election must be 145 to 160 days after a vacancy.
But Patrick said he will also push to change state law so that he can name an interim senator in the run-up to the election. Lawmakers have scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 9 on the proposed change, requested by Kennedy before his death last week.

So they get to honor Kennedy’s wishes and obey the law.
Another inconvenient law ... Why the need for an interim appointment if there is an election scheduled? You would think even masshole Democrats could see why this makes no sense.
Ex Post Facto laws are illegal in this country.
What law anymore? Any chance a Repub could win in a spcial election?
if they push for and succeed in changing the law on the interim appointment, we’d better watch out for a Obamacare cramdown in the Senate.
An interim appoitntee can use the office to campaign for the Jan. election. It would give that person a clear advantage. Are there any Republicans left in Mass. to run in the election? How about Mitt?
Mitt left Massachusetts with his tail between his legs and turned the governors seat over to the democrats. He can’t win an election there.
So if a Chicago cub’s seat cost a million dollars, how much does the Lion of the Senate’s seat cost?
And isn’t that exactly why you don’t want nor need to have an interim appointment — Unfair advantage?
I wonder, could the change be challenged in court?
It would obviously give unfair advantage to whoever was appointed.

As Claude Rain’s Captain Louis Renault, would have said, “I’m shocked, shocked I tell you ...”. To expect any Democrat in Massa Kennedy’s Plantation to take a different stance would be unthinkable. They have no shame, no memory and they worship at the alter of political expediency! This will soon enough be another Kennedy seat as decorum and tradition demands. The sheeple will baa and the politicos will bow.
Yes, and the supreme court would rule against the appointment.
I agree, the law was designed to prevent Romney from appointing, it would surly prohibit Patrick from doing the same.
Massachusetts is run like North Korea, maybe they should just ask L’il Kim to choose Kennedy’s successor.
Is there any chance at all a Republican could win in this special election?
they only need 50 or 51 for reconciliation cramdown tactic.
Mitt is not a republican
