I'm assuming the reference is to Huey Long. gov. of LA during the FDR admin. Huey was a rabble rouser who touted himself as a savior of the common man.Huey had great aspirations to be president, but he was gunned down on the steps of the capirol (LA) I believe.

I think he means Huey Newton, Black Panther.

Probably a reference to Huey Long —— notorious politician

Huey Long is likely who the author was referring to. I read it and assumed it was Huey Newton...

Thanks for the link, it looks highly interesting. I've bookmarked for a careful read later.

Obama presents many parallels to Huey Long, who was basically considered a Fascist in the 1930's, back when Fascists were seen as Good Guys (by some).

Huey’s still got a fan club

“Legacy
Huey Long transformed Louisiana politics and his programs improved the lives of millions of Louisianians. Nationally, his advocacy of populist causes led to the creation of Social Security, veterans’ benefits, federal student loans, and other programs still enjoyed by Americans today.”

And, at the very least, you can find Huey Newton’s dissertation.

Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men is a novelized version of the Huey Long story.

Don’t forget Huey Lewis and the News.
To: Verginius Rufus
Sean Penn did a good job as Willie. So did Broderick Crawford in the first film.

I loved Broderick Crawford in the TV show, “Highway Patrol” in the 1950’s/early 60’s. “This is Dan Matthews Highway Patrol, come out with your hands up Obama, you’re surrounded.”

I’ve seen the older version with Broderick Crawford, not the remake. I don’t remember how closely the original film follows the novel. The novel is an interesting study of corruption in politics, and in life generally.
