Experts see double-digit Dem losses By: Josh Kraushaar August 31, 2009 04:50 AM EST

After an August recess marked by raucous town halls, troubling polling data and widespread anecdotal evidence of a volatile electorate, the small universe of political analysts who closely follow House races is predicting moderate to heavy Democratic losses in 2010.

Some of the most prominent and respected handicappers can now envision an election in which Democrats suffer double-digit losses in the House — not enough to provide the 40 seats necessary to return the GOP to power but enough to put them within striking distance.

Top political analyst Charlie Cook, in a special August 20 update to subscribers, wrote that “the situation this summer has slipped completely out of control for President Obama and congressional Democrats.”

"Many veteran congressional election watchers, including Democratic ones, report an eerie sense of déjà vu, with a consensus forming that the chances of Democratic losses going higher than 20 seats is just as good as the chances of Democratic losses going lower than 20 seats,” he wrote.

At the mid-August Netroots Nation convention, Nate Silver, a Democratic analyst whose uncannily accurate, stat-driven predictions have made his website 538.com a must read among political junkies, predicted that Republicans will win between 20 and 50 seats next year. He further alarmed an audience of progressive activists by arguing that the GOP has between a 25 and 33 percent chance of winning back control of the House.

And that’s by sitting back and doing nothing. Imagine if we get some gritty campaigning.

After an August recess marked by raucous town halls, troubling polling data and widespread anecdotal evidence of a volatile electorate...
...the MSM have taken it upon themselves to lay the groundwork for a huge 'upset victory' for the gov't-funded Demwits in the mid-term elections, which will then help legitimize the miserable failure of the Obama administration.

If Democrats keeps aggressively pushing a radical agenda, his prediction may be on the low side. The Democrat party is being lead by the Truther-wing of their party.

As with many crises, people first predict a manageable setback, then as things progressively look grim, they are forced to make far more dire forecast.

Just as people reacted on the onset of current economic crisis.

Don’t believe it. These are all Dem operatives being quoted. The MSM and Democrats alike are running scared, but I think the intent of these stories is primarily to tamp down GOP hopes for taking the House much less the senate.

This must mean it’s time we moderate our tone and reach across the aisle to work with our Democrat colleagues to reach compromise on Cap and Trade and Health Care Reform and make sure this president is successful in turning the economy around. </s>

No time to gloat...The year is 2009,the election is a year away...Much work ahead, the target besides exposing incumbents now must be the syncophantic media.

We’ll see. People may NOT vote democrat, but it takes more than that to get them voting FOR republicans, who BETTER get on the ball and give people something to vote FOR.

I don't buy this for a second. Until the moderate/rino's are either gone or out of power this means absolutely nothing.

Without a clear conservative direction and conservatives in power in the republican party this is all B.S.!

Yep. He'd sell the nation to the highest bidder for 60 seconds in front of a TV camera.

It's always troubling for them when the Dems are losing. Note that they don't give much evidence for only modest GOP gains aside from "lightening doesn't strike twice". Very similar to 1994 when Gwen Eiffel couldn't forsee any "danger" of the GOP taking over the house. The press and the Dem establishment see the world through pink-colored glasses.
