2009 shatters heat record (Austin, TX.)
Austin American Statesman ^ | 8.30.2009 | Chuck Lindell

This is already the hottest summer in Austin's history — shattering the previous record — but the sweltering city might not be done setting dubious milestones in 2009.

Two more days of triple digits will tie the record for the most 100-degree temperatures in a year: 69 days of lawn-killing, air conditioner-straining heat. A typical year has 12 triple-digit days. The 1925 record appears safe for at least the next few days, with highs forecast in the 90s.

Meanwhile, this am, it was in the high 40s here in Iowa. The farmers are sweating the crops becoming mature before the frost. I think we’re 15 degrees below normal.

Back in college I could live rather cheap in Austin without AC.

No, they would rather bitch about the escalating real estate prices, the condo towers that are being built downtown and all the a-holes from around the country that want to move here.

I actually feel bad for the farmers/ranchers here and elsewhere who are experiencing unusual weather.

Sick of listening to people who don’t have a stake in the weather conditions.

We go to cool spots to vacation (NM, CO, etc) Northerners should come to Texas for warmth. (just for vacation though)

We’ve sure enjoyed the cool mornings the past few days. Enough so that I’ve shut off the a/c and opened the windows for a while - up until it reaches about 80 outside. I may start shutting down and opening up at sundown here soon since I’ve almost accustomed myself to sleeping at 80 degrees anyway to save on the electricity - the nights seem to be getting much cooler.

Hey now, I bitch about those thing too. (we live outside the Liberal enclave in Williamson county)

Actually, a Liberal is the reason for those condos and the high cost of living. Wynn wanted 25,000 additional souls living downtown.

Hey Wolf, at least we didn’t have to mow!!! I just hope my yard comes back next year. I’m sure it’s done for this year.
Most of the farmers over here on this side just plowed everything back into the soil, it just wasn’t worth trying to keep going.

One good thing about the high real estate prices in Austin is that they are pushing people out of East Austin and into P-Ville and Round Rock. With that crime in Austin has decreased or been level while the same cannot be said for our northern suburbs.

Just rode the Hotter-N-Hell 100 in Wichita Falls Texas... It was 64 degrees at the start and was only 90 when I finished. That's a whole lot better than 3 years ago when it was 108 by 11 a.m.

Temps vary.. I guess more CO2 emissions in holistic Austin than oil drilling Wichita Falls.

gee, go figure.

Maybe I’ve been too busy to notice, but it hasn’t seemed warmer than normal to me except for those days when it spiked earlier than usual in July. We were talking at work that August hasn’t seemed as hot as usual. There’s almost been a nip in the air the last two mornings.

Gonna be hard to *keep Austin weird* with all the Californians and Yankees taking up all the housing. LOL!

In winter, western cities that are surrounded by mountains sometimes get an inversion layer of smog, of warm, dirty air that cannot rise through a layer of cold air above it.

A Russian industrial city had a dangerously bad version of a winter inversion layer, and came up with a novel solution. Big, black, tethered balloons.

When the sun hit the balloons, the skin of the balloons got hot, and gave off a column of hot air that went straight up from the balloons, and punched holes through the inversion layer like a straw. The trapped warm air below followed it up, taking the pollution with it, and allowing clean, cold air to come in and take its place.

What is weird is even with all the migration to Austin, the city still votes heavy Democrat, in fact Democrats are increasing their share of the vote in Austin and Travis County.

In my West Austin precinct in the 2008 GOP primaries I waited in line for one minute to vote. My wife who was with me waited in line for an hour and a half to vote in the Dem Primary.
