Mark Steyn: Things only a Kennedy could get away with And by not calling his bluff on Chappaquiddick, Americans became complicit in it.
We are enjoined not to speak ill of the dead. But, when an entire nation or, at any rate, its "mainstream" media culture declines to speak the truth about the dead, we are certainly entitled to speak ill of such false eulogists. In its coverage of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's passing, America's TV networks are creepily reminiscent of those plays Sam Shepard used to write about some dysfunctional inbred hardscrabble Appalachian household where there's a baby buried in the backyard but everyone agreed years ago never to mention it.
In this case, the unmentionable corpse is Mary Jo Kopechne, 1940-1969. If you have to bring up the, ah, circumstances of that year of decease, keep it general, keep it vague. As Kennedy flack Ted Sorensen put it in Time magazine:

BTTT for a “must read.”
You are truly, evilly insane.
I actually take exception to your favorite quote from the article, especially as it comes from a Brit. Plenty of societies are complicit in cover-ups. What exactly could we do? It was appalling that he was not prosecuted for an obvious crime, but I do not agree that it was the “American public” who protected the Kennedys.... maybe Massachusetts voters, political string-pulling, the Catholic-lite church, but not Americans in general.
Otherwise, Mark speaks for me.
....especially as it comes from a Brit......
Recall if you will that he is a foreign exchange student at the EIB University, no ordinary Brit.
I know what his credentials are.

Obviously not.
Mark Steyn is a Canadian citizen, not a Brit. He was simply educated at Oxford, hence the accent. Moreover, he chooses to live in New Hampshire because he loves and prefers America, its culture and its Founders' ideals much more than those of either Canada or the UK. He is a staunch defender of the Second Amendment and carries himself.
Terrific article, I highlighted here: “Mark Steyn and the ‘Duke of Chappaquiddick’” http://gregcontreras.blogspot.com/ (Citizen5408).
Well, the accent is an affectation then. I didn’t know that. None of this detracts from the passion of his commentary and, for me, the central principle of honor vs. coverup.
Call it what you like. The official line on Mary Jo is that she was a saint.
I say, bullshit.
Anyone connected with the Kennedy’s is immediately suspect. Starting with their quality of their character.
If insane works for you then I’m OK with that. I don’t need your approval.
