(8/27/2009) Toytoa announced today it will end production at Fremont, Californias New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., better known as NUMMI, in March 2010. Before todays announcement, California lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have appealed to Toyota to save Nummi and its 4,600 jobs, a majority of which are represented by the United Auto Workers union. The NUMMI plant, established in 1984, employs 4,600 workers.

More Dominoes fall Mr. Obama.
I have a Pontiac Vibe. I love it. This makes me sick. I was hoping to replace my Vibe with another one when my current one poops out. But it will be no more. So sad.
(We have a package of bills to let Toyota know that we love them and we want them to stay in Fremont, said state Sen. Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro)
I bet nobody asked GM or Toyota about their input when they were continuously adding environmental regulation on car companies. There will be no manufacturing left in California as long as the stupid people of California continue to be environmental communists.
Yeah, I had a Prizm assembled at NUMMI, very good car.
Used to work across the freeway from the plant, and although I didn’t have the slightest connection to its operations I’d feel a little surge of pride seeing it and driving a car built there.
It might be OK, I have heard they *might* move the Matrix assembly to the new Texas plant.
With Pontiac going the way of the Dodo, your chances of buying a new Vibe were thin anyway.
Buy the way UAW:
Ha Ha!
Clunker the plant, give’m all five grand and build a new plant.
To really get the economy going, just crush all the vehicles coming right off the line!
(Sea U 2 can bee a lefty economist!)
So replace it with a Toyota Matrix...it's the same vehicle except for the Pontiac grille and some trim and logos.
......To really get the economy going, just crush all the vehicles coming right off the line!.......
When a vehicle is remanufactured from previous vehicle parts the seller must give a “Salvage” title.
There should be a special Lemon” title for cars built after the announcement to close the pant. The vindictive UAW will build death traps.
And I suspect therein may lie the problem.
California’s enviro-nazi brigades are ecstatic as their job-killers score a big victory. Elimination of private autos is a #1 priority with liberal fascists, and was part of the secret negotiations between Carole Brownshirt and GM.
Thank you liberalism, your doing a great job.
did anyone see that editorial in the LA Times? It said that lower taxes does not help get companies to relocate to Nevada while complaining about the Nevada attempt to attract California companies.
How’s that Hope and Change working for you Fremont, CA?
CBO says 2.3 million more jobs lost by next year. Probably a low-ball.
Ironically, in 2008 the average GM UAW worker made $29.78 per hour in wages, while the average Toyota employee made $30. The big difference in cost to the employer is the combination of idiotic work rules and non-wage costs.
If, in its wildest collectivist fantasy, Gallup comes up with 50%, you gotta figure the actual polling results pointed to about 7%.
Actually, I posted that message on the wrong thread.
“I have a Pontiac Vibe. I love it.”
Me too. Couldn’t agree more about being sad to see the Nummi plant close.
