Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has endorsed Railroad Commission Chairman Michael Williams for Senate.

"We need conservatives willing to engage the Democrats on the field of ideas...willing to speak of a 21st Century conservatism...willing to stand and fight on principle," Gingrich wrote in a fund-raising letter to Texas Republicans. "We need leaders like Michael Williams.

Williams is one of several Republicans tangling for the soon-to-be vacate Senate seat now held by Kay Bailey Hutchison. The senior senator is running for governor and says she will probably leave the Senate before the end of the year.

Gingrich knows what he’s talking about, and Rick Perry ought to listen. In fact, if Perry were to appoint Williams, it would help his chances in the Republican primary.

Williams has opposed property owners rights (noise, pollution) while supporting oil companies and pipeline companies. Sorry. Gengrich has also supported education initiatives put forward by Al Sharpton.

No to both.

When it comes to political strategy, conservatives ignore Newt Gingrich at their own risk.

Electing Michael Williams to the Senate would be monumental, the type of event that could change the political landscape for decades to come. It would also give us a solid, principled conservative that won’t catch “Potomac fever” like Kay Bailey Hutchison.

I like him; but will he actually keep his promises and do the right thing?

I’d be impressed if Perry were that smart.
