Torture-slaying trial, Day 8: Jurors resume deliberations By News Sentinel staff Posted August 25, 2009 at 9:11 a.m.
KNOXVILLE — Jurors in the torture-slaying trial of Letalvis Cobbins resumed deliberations this morning.
The panel from Davidson County deliberated about seven and a half hours Monday, ending the day without a verdict before returning to the hotel where they have been sequestered for more than a week.
Testimony wrapped up Saturday with Cobbins, 26, taking the stand in his own defense.
Cobbins is accused of taking part in the January 2007 kidnapping, rape and slaying of Channon Christian, 21,and Christopher Newsom, 23. The young couple were carjacked while outside a Washington Pike apartment complex and then taken to a Chipman Street house where Cobbins’ brother Lemaricus Davidson lived.
Newsom was shot to death and left along railroad tracks near the house. Christian was left to suffocate to death in a trash can inside the home.
Cobbins has admitted raping Christian inside the house, although he testified Saturday that she offered him the oral sex if he could help ensure her freedom. Christian and Newsom did not know Cobbins, Davidson or their co-defendants, George Thomas and Vanessa Coleman, who await trial.
If jurors convict Cobbins of first-degree murder, they will shift into a penalty phase in which they will consider evidence about whether he should be executed. Prosecutors will try to show his crimes are so heinous he deserves death, while defense attorneys will try to counter with mitigating facts.
Sixteen people were impaneled last week at the trial’s start. A woman juror, however, bowed out after Friday’s graphic photographic evidence of the couple’s rape injuries. Fifteen jurors remain, but only 12 are taking part in the deliberations.

I'll be 52 in a few days. 40 years ago I could walk from downtown Knoxville movie houses to the phone company at Magnolia and Broadway at dark and felt safe. I did it many times as a kid. Now if I go out I carry. One day I suspect an overzealous cop might search me or my vehicle and find it. But I don't believe in asking for permission to do what the GOD & Constitution allows me which is to go armed for the purpose of self defense of family and myself as I have a responsibly if possible to stay alive for them as well.
The black people need to wake up granted but we all need to wake up and stop tolerating thugs living amongst us wishing to rob us of life or property. It's a cultural deterioration affecting us all. Most of it started by The Great Society when Dads stopped being dads and became as Tomcats leaving the mothers to raise children on welfare. Now both mothers and fathers abandon families in record numbers. The nation is in a steep moral decline. Those loving their families need to protect them as much as possible. We should never enable the ones wishing to do harm to us our our family not even by enabling our own family members wishing to do so.
So you do want crimes to be designated “hate crimes”? I’m only concerned if the jurors acquit the plainly guilty defendant and then go out and party with him and his lawyer. If he goes to jail, though, what more do you want?

When I try to explain to younger folks how much worse off we are today except in technologocal advance they just stare at me glumly and spout but you had racism and sexism and blah blah blah.
Yeah but they still do and those things are nor ends unto themselves and what we replaced those negatives with is arguably worse....much worse as a whole
How did blacks in large part go from being under racist yoke yet somewhat institutionally intact and then today have gone nuts largely...and the lower classes of all other races have followed suit inclduing the esteemed Asian.

I get so galled at how the medai ignores a race crime worwe than James Byrd and why do they do it?
Go into a newsroom and look around. You’ll see why. Affirmative action has been there too long.
What do I want? I want them dead as soon as possible so the taxpayers isn't stuck for the next 60 yrs. or some liberal judge let's them out down the road.
