"Ghetto Girl": Michelle Obama and the Martha's Vineyard black elite
SFGate: City Brights ^ | 8/24/9 | Belva Davis

Are you ready? Here's a quick lesson in African American social history. For more than a century, the East Coast black elite, including prominent artists, intellectuals and financially secure professionals, has gathered on the island of Martha's Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts, to relax and spend time with one another. By tradition, other ethnic groups do the same, and while the groups mingle socially, they largely live in segregated communities on the island. The black community has always summered near the town of Oak Bluffs, on the Island's northern coast.

Dock at Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard

The idea that rich, smart, black people get together to entertain each other (there is little else to do there) has intrigued the media lately. Why the new focus? Well, this week, the First Family will join that tradition, another socially-prominent, African American family escaping the summer heat on the beaches of the Vineyard.

When the news broke, the writer Toure penned an article for New York Magazine about this annual gathering of the clan, focusing on its elite status (generational ownership of homes on the island) and the myriad criteria for being welcomed there, especially during the popular Labor Day weekend.

While trying to unlock the mystery of the island's attractions and assess the Vineyard's suitability as a vacation spot for our new First Family, one anonymous, snobby, long-time islander is reported to have questioned Michelle Obama's place in the group's hierarchy, referring to the First Lady as just a "ghetto girl", one who did not belong in the august company of the regulars.

Needless to say, this quote has sent shock waves around the country.

listing on it the names of 48 famous women who came from "the ghetto" and made the world a better place.

That last phrase would automatically disqualify Michelle. What the hell has she done to make the world a better place?

We moved to Virginia from Oklahoma when I was in high school. Dad was pastor to two churches, one sort of up in the hills. He came home from services there one weekend to tell us an interesting story. Parents for one of the parishioners were visiting and while the couple themselves were for all appearances white, the wife’s parents were very definitely AA. My Mom researched the whole “passing” thing after that.

A lot of that in the “old” Virginia AA community and those who can pass are viewed in a whole different light. Sort of a different cultural thing for a family from the midwest.

The nicest beaches in the United States are on Fire Island, IMHO. Been to Hermosa and Laguna in Cali, thought they were OK. South(east) Florida has warm water, but plenty of erosion (and tourists!).

Frida Kahlo was not a “ghetto girl.” She was the daughter of an upper middle class German Jew and his Mexican wife.

How is this different from the Jewish folks who disproportionately seem to dominate East Hampton in the summer? Folks seem to congregate with those with whom they have ethno-religious kinship, especially out of the office (although, admittedly this is less true of the millenials, outside of the black community of course).

I know. A lot of the women on that list are or were not “ghetto girls.” Most of them weren’t black, either. I think in this context “ghetto girl” means “well-known destructive leftist, liberal, or commie woman.”

Recently read a book on Golda Meier. She led a fascinating life but was a big leftist(socialist) from her younger years through being PM of Israel...Spent time living in Kibbutz and loved it..

Being First Lady of the United States is status enough for any gathering.

I don’t blame people for being socialists many years ago, before the world had a real chance to see just how badly socialism works. There was a time when it seemed like a good idea.

My eyesight’s slipping, too, because I thought it was people frolicking in the water and bad lighting in that shot. I sometimes take pictures with people silhouetted like that. Upon second look I can now see what’s really there. Time for an optometrist appointment.

Sucks getting older.

I think NJ is really beautiful.
My husband grew up in Randolph Township/Morristown and we go back every 10 years or so to just hang. I love that area. Green and lush. NJ is not all bad. ;-)

AND as I recall, a city employee with all the bennies that accompany. Yet all that the MSM mentions about her background is that poor, poor Mee-chelle is from the South Side.
