A Blue Dog's Lament: 'People are scared' (Rep. Allen Boyd - D-Fl)

MARIANNA, Fla. — Rep Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) is a skilled politician who has pretty much seen it all — a Deep South Democrat who’s managed to dispatch all opponents in his conservative-leaning Panhandle district since winning election in 1996.

But as he fended off gnats buzzing through the August humidity after a morning fending off angry constituents at a town hall meeting here, Boyd confided that the depth of the unease spurred by the health care debate had caught him by surprise.

“People are scared,” Boyd said twice, trying to explain what would drive his constituents away from home and work and out into the broiling Florida sun in the middle of the week to see their congressman.

I’ve been going to some of these rallies...trust me, people are very scared. Many are certain that they’ll be denied care b/c of their age for existing ailments.

Does anyone know if this guys district includes Navare, which is about 20 or 30 mile west of Eglin AFB on the coast, and 20 or 30 miles east of Pensacola?

The red balloon is where this congressman was when this article was written, I marked where Navare would be, I have some distant relatives in that area.

Anyone know about this guys area? Is Navare in his district?

Why would this moron say they’re “in the minority” when polls clearly indicate a majority of Americans do not want this.

Navarre is in District 1, Jeff Miller’s district. Jeff is a Republican. No, unfortunately, Boyd is my Senator.

“People are scared,”

Lots of people fled from Germany and the surrounding European countries during the rise of Hitler and the NAZIs in the 1930s. At first they were labeled paranoid fools, but as the horror in Europe incrementally grew, their instincts proved to have been correct.

Today in the USA, people's instincts are screaming at them that "Something wicked this way comes".

As a veteran I am incensed at the most recent gambit - using the VA medical system (which by the way liberal were assailing as a failure last year this time) as a wedge. Our obligations to our veterans who have sacrificed their lifestyles, fortunes, bodies, families, and friends in defense of this country cannot be considered as equivalent to socialization of the entire health care system.

By the by, Mr, Boyd, you are the only Democrat I have heard yet say that illegals will be denied care - some of your compatriots are saying quite the opposite.

Who do we believe??
A leftists in a safe district, or a blue dog who needs to ‘quite the fears’ of conservatives?

The Blue Dogs from largely red states ought to be scared. However, the condescension shown by Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer etc. toward average Americans is only fanning the flames of a revolution that will doom Democrats nationwide.

You have to understand the area. In order to win a local office one competes in the Democrat primary there is typically no Republican running. That results in there being very very few well known local republicans. Everyone that has run against Boyd has been an almost unknown lightweight with basically no money. The district is a sparsely populated one so covers a large area too large for door to door retail politics. The other factor that no one considers is that while the area is visibly conservative there are lots of state government employees out in the woods. These are not the strident ones with the extreme agenda but mostly paper pushers of all sorts but they do know which side of the bread their butter is on. Boyd is a comfortable pick he makes the right blue dog noises at home, was well known even before political life, and he brings home the bacon, ribs, and a side of pork roast. He will not be as easy to unseat as people think.

He’s doing the leftist projection thing again..

The people who are showing up ARE ANGRY, and the lib politicians are SCARED.. so, what do the libs do? Instead of admitting they are wrong and SCARED and have MADE THEIR CONSTIUENTS MAD AS HELL???? Well they just break out the old liberal play book and claim and pull out the old “projection” play and claim their constiuents are SCARED.

Only LIBS from the BLUEST OF BLUE districts are safe if they vote for this Fauxbamacare crap... All these so called “conservative” dems, are through with their elected careers if they vote for it, and now they know it.

Na Na Na Na... Na Na Na Na... Hey, Hey, Hey! Good-Bye....

The overhyped and in many cases fraudulent sense of grass-roots fervor during an August Democrats would like to forget is easy to minimize. But for all the cries of Astroturf fakery and ginned-up crowds, a ground zero view in a district like Boyd’s underlines that a very real sense of anger and frustration is bubbling over as summer wanes.

I hope the Democrats keep thinking that these attitudes and actions are 'ginned up', and keep talking down the protesters. They'll just be digging their own graves for 2010.
