Sebastian Faulks has moved quickly in an attempt to avert criticism over his comments about the Qur'an, which he was quoted describing as "just the rantings of a schizophrenic" with "no ethical dimension" in an interview with the Sunday Times yesterday.
"While I believe the voice-hearing of many Old Testament prophets and of John the Baptist in the New might well raise psychiatric eyebrows today, it is absurd to suggest that the Prophet, who achieved so much in military and political – quite apart from religious – terms, can have suffered from any acute illness. Only a fully cogent and healthy person could have done what he did," Faulks told the Guardian today. He went on to offer "a simple but unqualified apology to my Muslim friends and readers for anything that has come out sounding crude or intolerant. Happily, there is more to the book than that."
His interview with the Sunday Times also saw him call the Qur'an "a depressing book", which is "one-dimensional", with "no ethical dimension like the New Testament, no new plan for life". The novelist, who has included the character of a student led astray by an Islamist terrorist cell in his forthcoming book, A Week in December, was also reported to have opined of the Qur'an: "It says 'the Jews and the Christians were along the right tracks, but actually, they were wrong and I'm right, and if you don't believe me, tough — you'll burn for ever'."
But today Faulks said that often during an interview the case is overstated "in order to make a point more clearly".

A man had a flat tire on a country road one night.
As it happened his flat occurred right next to the fence of an insane asylum.
The man took off the hubcap, loosened the nuts on the tire and started to jack the car up to take the tire off.
As he did he noticed a man standing on the other side of the fence watching him.
He ignored the man, and took the nuts off one by one placing them in the hubcap.
As he took the tire off the wheel he accidentally stepped on the edge of the hubcap sending the nuts flying into the ditch beside the road.
"SH_T! Now what do I do?" he said to himself out loud.
The man standing on the other side of the fence said, "Take one nut from each of the other tires and use them to hold that tire in place. That will get you to the service station."
The man, amazed, said, "Aren't you an inmate of the asylum?"
The man replied, "I in here for being crazy, not for being stupid."
The guy must be panicked. He went from criticizing Islam on the weekend to slandering Judaism and Christianity on Monday while assuring us that, no, that Muhammed guy, he's all right.

Harley Davidson biker
A Harley rider is passing the zoo, when he sees a little girl, leaning into the lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents. The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage, and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.
A New York Times reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter says, “Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I’ve ever seen a man do in my whole life.”
The biker replies, “Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.”
The reporter says, “Well, I’m a journalist from the New York Times, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page... So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?”
The biker replies, “I’m a U.S. Soldier and a Republican.”
The following morning the biker buys The New York Times to see if it indeed brings news of his actions,and reads, on front page:
