Idaho will be sellin’ wolf tags tomorrow! 180 bucks for non-resident! Would love to try that!

(25/3600)X 5280 =36.6666

(36.667X6)/3=73yds at a constant speed of 25mph in 6 seconds

We are too quick to think that bear wanted the man for a meal.

The bear obviously was underweight and old. Its getting colder, and it was charging the man full speed. I would have to deduce that the bear was after the man. The reason does not matter but I know that bears are opportunistic. They will eat humans if starving and if its an easy kill.

The man was smart carrying the sidearm. No doubt about that.

This happening has made me feel very stupid about carrying bear spray while in the Rockies/Wasatch/Tetons.... I will be in the market for a 454 real soon.... Or, is there anything else I could hip carry?

Here in Alaska, carrying a hand gun while out for a walk, where a bear encounter could happen is just plain common sense. Walk softly but carry a big stick si always good practice.

Why be scared to go for a walk? Carry the usual stuff you need -

>>>> I will be carrying more than bear spray next year in Wyo.! <<<<

Last time I was in NW Wyoming there was a drought and so there were black bears all over the place, including repeatedly in my campsite at all hours of night.

You’re pretty stuck with bear spray in the National Parks, but in anywhere else it’s at least reassuring to have a 44 Mag at hand.

Here in SE Idaho I carry a 4” Ruger Redhawk .44 Mag loaded with 300gr solid lead bullets. If I still lived in Alaska, I’d carry the same thing. Number one, because I already have it; number two, because it is fairly controllable; and number three, because it fits nicely in a hip holster and I always have it on me. First rule of a gun fight - have a gun.

I’m not so worried about bears any more but I had a close encounter with a big, PO’d Black Angus bull last summer while hiking in the mountains and carrying a .357 Mag. Fortunately, that episode ended w/o bloodshed. I looked at that bull and I looked at that .357 and I just knew that I did not bring enough gun.

The bear didn’t want a meal, he just wanted a jogging partner....

Wrong, you flunked mind reading 101. If I had wanted to shoot the bear I would have done it on a proper hunt.

You’ve probably heard the one about the National Park hikers who carried pepper spray and wore jingle bells in bear country. The next day they were missing and bear scat was discovered that smelled like pepper and had little bells in it...

>>> Bridger-Tetons/Hoback River <<<<

Aren’t Bridger-Teton and Shoshone NF where they’ve dumped all the bad bears and grizzlies from the last 40 years?

We started going to the Tetons & Yellowstone back in the 60’s when it was Yogi The Bear time and people were still feeding the black bears cookies and peanut butter sandwiches from the car windows.

These days I wouldn’t dare hike around Shoshone or Teton NF without a firearm AND bear spray.

No, I pegged you. Your know your failings is why you are whining.

Simply because of who you are doesn’t make others the least common denominator too.

Actually the bear would have probably been on him in 4 seconds. He’d been slipping in the brown stuff at his feet for at least two.

I hunt the Nat. Forests. Wyo. has stepped up and allows open carry while bowhunting this year. Which is a ‘good thing’... Just wish Texas would do the same...

454 casull is great for brown bear. A 44 magnum would also be good. Flat nosed or hollow-points for maximum damage. The heavier the gun the better for recoil management. A rifle would be best for control, but of course harder to carry.

If money is not an issue get a desert eagle in 44 mag or 50 AE. Easy to squeeze off more shots in a shorter period of time.

What I don't get is why do you want to live in the wilds and then pee and cry about the animals.
