It's the highest stakes ever for a Nevada election, and former boxer Sen. Harry Reid is on the ropes early. Either Republican Danny Tarkanian or Sue Lowden would knock out Reid in a general election, according to a recent poll of Nevada voters.
The results suggest the Democratic Senate majority leader will have to punch hard and often in order to retain his position as the most accomplished politician in state history, in terms of job status.
Nevadans favored Tarkanian over Reid 49 percent to 38 percent and Lowden over Reid 45 percent to 40 percent, according to the poll.
Reid's status makes him an icon of the Democratic Party and ties him to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and President Barack Obama, both of whom are losing ground among centrist and right-leaning voters in the country.
Winning "becomes more difficult when you are actually the one having to carry the water for the president," said Richard Davis, a professor of political science at Brigham Young University in Utah. "He (Reid) has got to get something out of the Obama administration that he can claim as his own."
But with the election more than a year away, Reid has plenty of time to attract more supporters to his corner.
Between now and November, 2010, Reid will attempt to show voters he can deliver lower health care costs and new jobs to Nevada, which has an unemployment rate pushing 13 percent.
"He fights for Nevada on those issues and others every day and he'll continue that battle to get our economy back on track," Reid spokesman Jon Summers said.
Reid also will remind voters, and influential fundraisers, that his in-state connections and national clout can pay dividends for all of Nevada.

hes an extremely dangerous stooge that the country will be better off without.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, and I don’t think Obama would shed any tears if Reid went down in flames. But it’s still over a year away and that’s a lifetime in politics.
This must absolutely frost Hillary. Wasn't she next in line behind Dingy Harry to be majority leader? Instead, she's cooling her heels as SOS in Africa while Slick Willy and Foo Manchu Bill grab all the glory in NK. Hide the ashtrays.....
ping
Or bury them in a sea of debt.
Until ACORN comes to the rescue.
Harry POS Reid BUMP!
Why does he have to fight? He has 60 votes anytime he needs 60 votes. Reid isn't exactly the underdog in the Senate, you know.
“They will find some other soft-spoken stooge to carry their water in the Senate.”

“Soft-spoken stooge” has Dick Durbin’s name written all over it.
Reid is expendable to Othuggo and Rahm. All they care about is rahming thru Deathcare.
He put Vegas in the corner...nobody puts Vegas in the corner.
Obama ain’t no genius, but it was an amazing feat he pulled off by taking the Clintons out of the spotlight and burying them in the netherworld. I never thought it would happen, but I’m giving Obama his due here on this one.
This guy should be hammered for going national and forgetting where he came from. Tom Daschle and Tom Foley him.
Sounds good. It becomes hard to ram a health care bill through when your senate leadership is running scared.
Is Danny Tarkanian related to former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian?
No kidding. Whatever Republican opposes him better plan on winning by a legitimate 10-15 percent. If it’s closer than that, enough ACORN/illegal alien votes will be found to steal the election. That will apply anywhere else as well in 2010. I figure at least an additional 10% have to turn on the Commie and his minions by Nov. 2010 for there to be a chance of turning the Dem majority out.
Tarkanian polls better (in this case), but he hasn’t proven he can win election yet. I believe he’s ran several races in Nevada and never won anything.
I don’t know much about Lowden, but she seems a bit more politically savvy than Tarkanian.
Any Nevada FReepers here that can offer some thoughts on these two candidates?
Yep - he’s his son.
I would love to get rid of Bonnie Fwanks, Reid and the Haggsta Pelosi
