In late 2004, Nicks began visiting Army and Navy medical centers in Washington, D.C. While visiting wounded service men and women, Nicks became determined to find an object she could leave with each soldier that would raise their spirits, motivate, and give them something to look forward to each day. She eventually decided to purchase hundreds of iPod Nanos, load them with music, artists, and play-lists which she would hand select, and autograph them. She now regularly delivers these tokens of her appreciation, bringing her closest friends to share the experience.
In 2006, Nicks held a get-together to raise money for her charity work. Many of her peers made contributions. Nicks continues to develop this philanthropic endeavor.[48]
I call it a soldiers' iPod. It has all the crazy stuff that I listen to, and my collections I've been making since the '70s for going on the road, when I'm sick...Or the couple of times in my life that I have really been down, music is what always dances me out of bed. Stevie Nicks, The Arizona Republic
So, as Mick [Fleetwood] and I went from room to room delivering their tiny iPod, they told us their stories. Mick became his tall, loving, father figure, English self, taking in every word they said, remaining calm (at least on the outside) inspiring them. We floated from room to room down thru the halls of the 2 hospitals over a three-day period. We gave out all our iPods. Right before I left for D.C., Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry dug into their pockets and came up with $10,000 for me. In my eyes they went from the coolest rock stars to generous great men; as my press agent Liz Rosenberg said, every returning wounded soldier should be given an iPod. It will be an integral part of their recovery. Stevie Nicks, Journal Entry
I always thought Stevie Nicks was a native-born American.
We all made mistakes during our younger days. Shoot, I voted for McGovern and Carter before I saw the light, and boy did I see the light!
In the 1980 election, my neighbors in the small German town I lived in were pleading with me to vote against Reagan. They were so sure that RR was going to start WWIII. Lucky for me that my German was proficient at that point, as I gave them a lesson in American civics and nuclear policy.
Was I effective? Shortly after the election, I was invited to sit at the stammtisch of my neighborhood gasthaus, a table reserved for family/friends of the family. Of course, I'm sure that it was more for my patronage than it was for my political views! LOL!
Back to the thread: any support given to our soldiers is appreciated. I try not to pay too much attention to politics when I'm listening to music. For example, I may vehemently disagree with David Crosby's politics, but I can't help it...Southern Cross is an awesome song.
“ast I knew, she was strung out on all sorts of drugs. Good to know she got herself together”
Stevie Nicks has always been very candid about her past substance abuses. Fortunately, she has clearly grown up and learned from her mistakes.
But this is why I really respect her. Not too many people in her industry really take much time out of her life to give back to those who have been hurt and disfigured to protect our freedom. Stevie Nicks clearly understands what these heroes have done for us.
“I always thought Stevie Nicks was native born American”
She is. Born in Phoenix AZ.
Mick Fleetwood and John and Christine McVie are British.
I’ve always loved Stevie Nicks and her music. She has been actively supporting wounded soldiers since the first Gulf War. Her politics do lean to the left, but she clearly respects the views of others also.
I hadn’t heard about the iPod giveaways and I think that that is absolutely wonderful. It is nice to know that some celebrities still care about those young soldiers who go in harms way.
Yes it is and I have been a fan for as long as I can remember. She is a real person for sure
But you must understand, there are those around here who demand absolute ideological purity from any and all.
I recall many years ago an inspiring story of a rock star or actor doing something special, and one of the first posts was "does anybody know their position on abortion?"
The issue of the story had nothing to do with abortion, but for this person, he just had to know how this person came down on that specific issue before he was willing to give any approval.
Go Stevie!
Roll into the World Gym at midnight (bi's & tri's night), shut down the hip-hop crap, and hook up my iPod with my 34 favs.
When 2:30 AM rolls around, I let the brothers have their music noise back.
Fleetwood Mac was originally a British Band led byPeter Green, when Peter left the group the remainder moved to LA where they recruited Buckingham and got Nicks because of it.
Mick was married to one of the Boyd sisters...the other sister Jenny) was married to George Harrison and eventually Eric Clapton. Donovan, George, and Eric each wrote at least one song about Jenny. Eric met Jennifer while he was teaching George Harrison how to play (Uncredited), "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Eric fell for Jennifer, hook, line and sinker.
Love “Landslide”.
Your endorsement is good enough for me. This is terrific, what she is doing for the troops, just what the doctor ordered!! You go, Stevie.
Patty Boyd’s biography of her years with George Harrison and Eric Clapton is pretty good
Let me update you. She lost 60 lbs for her 60th birthday this year.
The drugs are long since gone and she has a new fan in me.
A splendid gesture, indeed. She must bring so many smiles to so many heroes.
Listenin’ to the Rumours album as I type. One of my favorites of all time.
Thanks.
A very admirable...and surprising....thing to hear about a famous showbiz type.
I saw Stevie Nicks perform at the US Festival in San Bernardino, CA. in 1982 and she was terrific. Now I think the world of her.
She is. Born in Phoenix AZ.
I don't know, what that before or after Arizona became a state? Has anyone seen her "long form" birth certificate?
;-)
Sorry, just a reflex....
