"Your action," he wrote MacAskill, "makes a mockery of the grief of the families who lost their own on December 21, 1988. You could not have spent much time with the families, certainly not as much time as others involved in the investigation and prosecution."
He ended the Lockerbie letter with a frustrated question: "Where, I ask, is the justice?"
President Barack Obama on Friday called the elaborate homecoming in Libya for the freed bomber "highly objectionable."

Qaddafi Praises Britain Over Lockerbie Release
although, of course, this should be taken with a big grain of salt since Mr. Qaddafi is not very reliable.
“Do you think that Bush would have reacted otherwise?”
I believe the Bush Administration would’ve worked hard behind the scenes with the Brits and Scots and pressured them not to release the terrorist.
Ah, Deb, good to see your post. I recall I always enjoying reading your precise observations here on Free Republic.
V’s wife.
My god, how can this person be considered the representative leader of a nation who has 180 dead people and all he can say is this?
Bush was a far better man with all of his failings, Far, FAR better!
These terms that they use sound like the kind of terms historians would use to describe how a figure in history felt about some incident. "deeply troubled", "deep concern", "deeply saddened". It's like they are incapable of true emotions and real reactions. Bush and Clinton did it too.
>>We should have had a stealth bomber flying over the spot of his homecoming and dropped a 2,000 lbs bomb on the whole crowd.
I saw a short vidclip of that event, and was thinking at the time the world would be a better place if that sort of thing were to happen.
“Highly objectionable”....Obama uses language that an upper class twit in an old British movie would use. Come to think of it, he is rather twittish....Chamberlainesque, one might even say.
Exactly. Reagan and Bush Sr. pretty well neutered Gaddafi, and W persuaded him to give up his ties to Muslim terrorism and turn in his nukes. Since then, he has pretty much spit on the Arabs and has been playing a pan-African game instead.
What Obama has succeeded in doing is to show such weakness that Gaddafi is now doing a bit of Islamist celebrating, and our former ally the UK is trading terrorists for oil.
What good would it do to pull our ambassador from Libya or stage another fight with Brown? Let the Brits handle that matter. But the obvious thing is that Obama’s foolish behavior is causing other nations—including our allies, to disrespect us.
Hopefully, Gaddafi will stop there, and not get back into the terrorist revolutionary business. And hopefully the Brits and Scots will take care of their own scuzzy politicians.
He’s still wanted in this country ...........he is bound to seek medical attention in a country we have extradition with. Snag his sorry ass, bring him here, try , sentence him to death .............. no wait this is a socialist democrat administration that is three limbs lower on the lack’o’nuts tree than Carter was.
This and gitmo are proof we should never keep a terrorist prisoner alive more than 96 hours or let anyone know we have em at all.
Just my opinion.......Stay safe !
“he is bound to seek medical attention in a country...”
ha ha. thats actually quite funny. if this libyan waits long enough, and we extradite him to the U.S., and the obamacare passes, he should then get the public option and have his expenses paid for.... since our elected offices, education system, and scholarships are going to illegals, rather than those born here. Funny how things are working out. Can’t wait for the movie.
I know nothing of all this, but I have *heard* that there are some folks in Scotland (Lockerbie itself?) who thought he might be innocent.
Some of the UK online news outlets... have remarks in the comment section that show this to be true.
Many ppl felt he was wrongly convicted.
the problem with events like this, where the average person expects a different, more appropriate reaction from their leader, is that it fuels deep misgivings, and huge concerns over the legitimacy of those governing.
And....when other nation’s leaders (aka Brown), whom apparently agreed with the release but wrote in a letter that there better not be any partying going on in Libya on the murderer’s arrival or people across the pond may get all wee-weed up, then the brits and scots will question the legitimacy of their government.
Result?....hopefully downfall.
if the man was innocent and was framed,...why would Libya pay 1.5 billion in compensation? Argument doesn’t wash.
...makes a mockery of the grief of the families who lost their own on December 21, 1988.
"So anyway, let's make it an Arby's night."
again,...if the framing of an innocent libyan is true,..then the Brits have some serious justice problems:
1) they convict the wrong man
2) Kaddafi pays 1.5 billion in compensation
3) the scottish justice states, while the guy was convicted, he is released on compassionate reasons.
4) out of the blue, kaddafi’s son states that the when the brits brought up trade agreements with the libyans, the murderer’s release was a caveat.
oh, what the puppet masters do to pull our strings which way they want us to move.
I dunno — I really don’t. And in this regard I really, really don’t. But in such issues there’s often more than one ball in play. You tell me.
GREAT letter; perfectly stated. Made me proud.
“why would Libya pay 1.5 billion in compensation? Argument doesnt wash.”
to get INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND SANCTIONS LIFTED. That’s why.
Let’s stop calling him the Lockerbie Bomber. He is a murderer. He killed 259 on the plane, 11 on the ground.
Thirty-five students from Syracuse University, four from Colgate University, four from Brown University, two from Seton Hill University, and two from the State University of New York at Oswego were on board, flying home from overseas study in London. There was also one student from Hampshire College flying home from a field study in Nigeria. Ten of the victims were residents of Long Islandincluding father and son, John and Sean Mulroyand were returning home for seasonal celebrations with families and friends, as reported by Newsday of 27 December 1988.
He is a murderer. It’s that simple.
