On July 1, a 32-year-old Ansonia woman came home to a nightmare, and police now say her husband -- an alderman who was up for re-election in November -- was behind her attack.
The suspect, Keith Maynard, 42, resigned from his position on the Ansonia Board of Alderman on the eve of his arrest, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.
Maynard is accused of knocking Ida Lucarelli to the ground, covering her with a blanket and hitting her with a baseball bat, police said. She did not recognize her attacker, she told police. He was wearing a mask, the New Haven Register reports.
Police investigated. They were told a man was seen running from the house soon after assaulting Lucarelli, but police could not find him. Lucarelli was taken to Griffin Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
According to the arrest warrant, Maynard knew his then-fiancee was coming home from the gym on July 1 when he put on a mask, hid just inside the front door and attacked her when she came in. He allegedly threw a white comforter over her and kept her from getting away.

Wedding took place a few days after he beat her.
Just showing her who would be boss after the wedding.
Sorry, I know, it’s a brutal attack, but if you can’t laugh about assault with a deadly weapon, what can you laugh about?

This would not have happened to a woman who is prepared.
My husband first of all would never be a criminal like that dirtbag woman beater is, but he also knows to never ever surprise me.
He has a second shift job. If he’s coming home at an unusual time, too early or too late in the evening, or say he was coming back from a deployment with the Air Force days early or late....he knows to CALL FIRST or deal with the possible bad consequences of me not knowing it was him.
After all HE trained me. He knows what might happen should I assume he was a criminal. He also knows I am safe because he taught me how to be safe. And we like it that way. The best thing a man can do for his wife is teach her to be able to defend herself when he is not around. Big big doggies are good too, best alarm system there is.
Geezus if some masked guy was here, he’d be carried out in a bodybag. I’d let the dobermans chew on him a little first.
Sounds like he was looking for the sympathy vote. Was Rahm running his campaign?
