Movie of the Year: “Inglourious Basterds”
Debbie Schlussel ^ | Aug 20, 2009 | Debbie Schlussel

I wish my brave, tough Holocaust survivor grandfather, Isaac, was alive to see “Inglourious Basterds.”

He would love it even more than I did. So would my dad. And they would be cheering and laughing along with me.

Because the movie debuts at Midnight screenings tonight, I am posting this review early, and you’ll note that I was entirely wrong in my expectations for this movie when I first wrote about it, back in February. The movie is riveting. It’s fun and serious at the same time.

It’s not usual that I praise a Quentin Tarantino film or a flick starring Brad Pitt. I’m not a big fan of either. But “Inglourious Basterds” is either the exception to the rule or a new beginning (probably the former, at least in the case of Pitt, who is very good here). After two-and-a-half hours of this fantastic movie, I didn’t want it to end. I wanted more. So well done, so interesting, exciting, and suspenseful, it flew by. Like “The Departed (read my review),” it’s a well-wrapped treasure, with new delights at each uncovered layer. And a few puzzles, some of which aren’t answered but are designed to make you think.

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this movie.

Agree. Jackie Brown is one of my guilty pleasures. I liked it so much I bought the Pam Grier box set. When she tosses those “jewels” at Peter Brown’s girlfriend I doubled overed in pain and laughter. Cheesy fun but Pam is hot.

Kill Bill was idiotic, and I don't think too many people were riveted to Grindhouse.

I saw the movie last Saturday (it’s already out in the UK). I thought it was really good. Worth seeing that’s for sure.

Alas, it celebrates sending US soldiers to commit war crimes. Of course the Japanese stay behinds after surrender, and the German commandos in captured allied uniforms led by SS officer Otto Skorzeny were the ones actually sent to commit war crimes.

Mike Myers.

His role is very small. You'd never notice it was him if someone didn't tell you.

The real star of the show was the guy that played Col. Landa- the Jew Hunter. He put in an amazing performance.

I came away from the film not sure if I liked Pitt's performance or not, but he's got some great dialogue and scenes.

Another really, really good movie is Black Book. It’s about a Jewish woman who joins the Resistance in WWII. It came out in 2007, I think. It, too, is rated R for a couple of scenes. I highly recommend it. It’s a foreign film, but its so engrossing that you hardly realize you’re reading subtitles. It’s out on DVD.

Pulp Fiction is still my favorite movies of all time. I’ll give this one a shot, although I was disappointed in The Departed which Debbie seemed to like so well.

Alas, it celebrates sending US soldiers to commit war crimes.

In the context of the film the Basterds are simply giving them their just deserts.

Plus, it must be remembered that this film happens in an alternate universe. It doesn't have any bearing on our history.

It’s interesting that at this time in history there’s all these stories about Jews fighting back, starting with DEFIANCE. I saw an interview with the producer of the movie and he said he looked forever for a story about Jews fighting back. He said his whole life people would ask him how Jews could have just walked into the ovens...when he found that story he had to make it into a movie...and he did. Maybe it’s a sign.

I’d written this one off BECAUSE of Tarantino and Pitt.

That's intersting... Tarantino and Pitt have been two of my favorite movie people for many, many years.

I love Tarantino. The guy was a fricking video rental clerk and he’s a multi-millionaire famous director. Only in America.

Tarantino. No. It's final. There is no theme he can pick or treatment he can give it that will pry a plug nickel from my wallet.

“Pulp Fiction” - excellent; “Reservoir Dogs” - excellent, but a bit overboard on the gore; “Jackie Brown” - very, very good; “Kill Bill I” - crap; “Kill Bill 2” - crap squared; “Grindhouse” - waste of time.

I still find it hard to believe Tarentino did the “Kill Bills”. Listen to the dialog in “Pulp Fiction” or “Reservoir Dogs” and it grabs your attention even if you’re not looking at the pictures (which I do a lot with a flic on the tube while I’m working); try the same with the “Kill Bills” and the dialog is so wooden you’d think it was written by a high school student.

And I really liked Pitt in “Snatch” (it helps if you turn the closed captioning on, though).

Tarantino hasn’t made that many films and what he has made is mostly good. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction , Jackie Brown...

I thoroughly enjoyed the two 'Kill Bill' movies.

Pitt is a Christian & Bush hater and a lib. People need to stop shilling for libs and Hollywood here.

I kinda liked it. It had good dialog for a cheap drive in plot, and a good performance by Kurt Russel.
