'Romney care' touted as a model for national health care reform

(CNN) -- If Washington wants health care reform with bipartisan support, experts say consider what former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accomplished as governor in Democratic Massachusetts.

"You don't have to have a public option," Romney said. "You don't have to have the government getting into the insurance business to make it work."

Three years after enacting its own version of reform, Massachusetts now has near-universal coverage.

Taxpayer watchdogs say it's affordable.

"There is this widespread assumption, that is treated as fact, that it's breaking the bank in Massachusetts ... it's not breaking the bank at all." said Michael Widmer of Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation.

And health care experts say it's popular.

"Seven in 10 people in the state support the program, and no more than one in 10 would repeal it." said Robert Blendon with the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Unlike Democratic proposals that would give Americans the choice of joining a government-run health care plan, Massachusetts has no public option. Instead, people in the state are required to buy private insurance, and the poor get subsidies.

The reform created the Commonwealth Health Insurance Connector Authority, which is similar to a health insurance exchange.

“Doesn’t it work like bank bail outs and corporate welfare?”

um not.
Mandates. like forcing you to have car insurance, or making you wear seabelts. forcing everyone in allows the insurance itself to be the subsidy.

We opposed the bailouts too bucko.

Wealth care for the party that claims to be Christians but worships Ayan Rand a devout atheiest.

As opposed to embracing statism? I'll take wealth anyday, and I don't care what Rand's religious beliefs were.

“let’s all bitch and moan about who our candidate will be, point out all his (or hers) weaknesses (in each of our opinions) and we will end up with McKain or Dole again and another four years of the village idiot.....brilliant strategy.......pathetic”

Nominating a liberal like Romney - just as bad as McCain and almost as bad as Dole - is a losing strategy.

Yep, the GOP needs the .09% of the blacks who might vote Republican. Can’t do without them. Blacks for the most part will not vote Republican, despite the evidence that the Democraps have been and still are the racist party. They are just dumb.

It was more likely our flawed primary system that gave us McCain. Vetting our candidates is a good thing.

"Seven in 10 people in the state support the program, and no more than one in 10 would repeal it."

I doubt that these numbers are current -- the 70% is pretty much people who thought it was a good idea at the outset (believing obediently that it would cut costs). That was before the sales tax hike, etc. to pay for it!

I would estimate that it's probably about 70% of residents who have (or had, given rising unemployment) health insurance through work or union or Medicare or state welfare and so would be unaffected -- except of course for reaping the benefits of the chimeral "cost cutting".

I very much doubt that the newly unemployed, now required by law to carry health insurance and paying for it out of unemployment benefits or savings are quite that enthusiastic.

Hey, I think we have a catchy slogan here:

RomneyCare run by Massholes will bankrupt the country more slowly than ObamaCare run by the Chicago mob.

Well, I don’t appreciate when ‘newbees’ come on here and start slamming anyone, even the GOPers I don’t like. They have to prove themselves to not be trolls first. I guess you qualify....Barely. LOL
