Real Rewards
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 5:3

I once viewed the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-12 as a kind of sop Jesus threw to the unfortunates: “Well, since you aren’t rich, and your health is bad, and your face is wet with tears, I’ll toss out a few nice phrases to make you feel better.”

Unlike medieval kings who threw coins to the masses, though, Jesus had the advantage of dangling real rewards before His audience. He who came down from heaven knew well that the glories of the kingdom of heaven would easily counterbalance whatever misery we might encounter here on earth.

Among many Christians, an emphasis on future rewards has gone out of fashion. My former pastor Bill Leslie used to observe, “As churches grow wealthier and more successful, they’re less likely to sing ‘This world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through’ and more likely to intone, ‘This is my Father’s world.’ ”

We dare not discount the value of hope in future rewards. One need only listen to the songs composed by American slaves to realize this consolation of belief. “Swing low, sweet chariot, comin’ for to carry me home.” “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen, nobody knows but Jesus.”

Over time I have learned to respect, and even long for, the future rewards Jesus has promised.

Let me go, for earth’s fond pleasures
Soon will vanish and decay;
But the soul has richer treasures
Shining bright as cloudless day. —Bucks

Dark trials will be rewarded by bright crowns.

And a WooHoo for me....I’ve been on the phone for 15 minutes trying to explain the weeks a guy gets paid for....”do you have a pencil and calendar?” Write this down....he just now got it!!! He thinks he’s missing a week of pay, but he finally gets it that I can’t do anything about it! The people that turn his time in have to fix it. Whew!!

I would not want to be on the wrong end of that dog.

I had the great privilege of observing a dog training infantry unit at Fort Benning during the 70s. It was amazing. The bond between the trainer and the dog was breathtaking. Their lives are in each other's hearts. In Vietnam, the dogs were trained to go out ahead of a column of 15 men through the jungle, and to detect and silently signal enemy presence, tripwires, bungee pits, land mines and caches of weapons, rice or drugs. If they detected something, they were trained to sit and move their head or ears in a certain way so that the handler, twenty or more feet behind them, could signal the column to handle the situation appropriately. Their lives were protected by the dogs. A few dogs got blown up, as the first to pass over a landmine in a jungle trail. Heroes.

There were two training centers in the U.S. at that time, and if I'm not mistaken, statues have been erected to commemorate the dogs at both bases.

A Tribute to the War Dogs of the United States Military

Cool story

I’ve seen the statue of Balto in Central Park. Seeing the cartoon gave me a great appreciation of what dogs could do.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you
The love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you
Wherever you are, God is,
And all is well.
Amen.

BLESS THIS HOUSE
 Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.
