VILSECK, Germany A manhunt is under way for a U.S. Special Forces soldier who fled after being convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a German woman.
Sgt. 1st Class Kelly A. Stewart who was found guilty of multiple charges including kidnapping, forcible sodomy and aggravated sexual assault of a woman in an August 2008 incident was last seen early Thursday morning by his escort at an on-post hotel.
Stewart, 36, is an Iraq war veteran who trains fellow Special Forces soldiers at the International Special Training Center in Pfullendorf.
Hes an angry animal and not a human, said the 29-year-old victim, standing outside the Vilseck courthouse Thursday morning after learning he had disappeared. I know how dangerous he is. Its impossible to believe that they left him alone last night.
Sgt. 1st Class Detrick Hampton, a member of Stewarts unit, was sharing a room with Stewart at the Kristall Inn, Vilsecks on-post hotel.
At Thursdays sentencing hearing, Hampton told the military judge that he last saw Stewart before drifting off to sleep early in the morning. When he awoke around 7:30 a.m., Stewart was missing, along with his Class A uniform, wallet, two cell phones and a rented black Audi Q5 SUV, Hampton said.
It was not clear whether Stewart had a weapon.
The U.S. military and German police are coordinating the search for the missing soldier.
A Be On the Lookout poster shows Stewarts mugshot and advises anyone who comes in contact with the soldier to approach him with caution. It says Stewart has visible tattoos, speaks near-perfect German and may attempt to pass himself off as a German.

Was that The Equalizer? Sounds familiar.
I would suspect he has vanished into the skinhead community in Germany. They would love to have a trained warrior of his skills.
Nor would they be very concerned about his extra curricular activities.
The soldier was married and expecting a baby. Seems odd that he would give that all up to forcefully rape a girl that was already planning on putting out. Could it be that she was incensed that it was only a one night stand?
On Tuesday, government prosecutors built a case that relied, almost entirely, on testimony from the victim, who said she met Stewart at the See-studio disco in Böblingen on Aug. 22 last year and left with him expecting a one-night stand at her place.
Hell, even her testimony sounds just like ordinary rough sex, if "blows" were actually slaps.
Once she entered the room, she endured a sadistic rape that included blows to the head and body, hair-pulling and biting, she said.
Maybe not for you. I personally like movies (for example) where many many people are senselessly murdered or otherwise gunned down. The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Dirty Harry. Natural Born Killers. Bourne Identity. Full Metal Jacket. etc etc etc. I'm usually willing to pay good money to see that. I also like seeing grown men beat each other to a bloody pulp in a cage for money. And I like watching the little clips and videos that emerge from Afghanistan and Iraq of our guys blowing the bad guys into little bitty pieces.
All-American entertainment.
But each of us will find entertainment in different things.
This reminds me of a scene in "The Fugitive" with Harrison Ford.
Ford steals an ambulance to escape from a hospital, and Tommy Lee Jones says, "Where the hell is he going in an ambulance?"
In terms of escape, the Class A uniform is just as ostentatious as the ambulance.
YOUR comments dismay me considering the facts that the incident wasn't reported until several months afterwards.......Why?
Having read the whole article, it sounds pretty bogus.
He sounds innocent.
from the article:
“government prosecutors built a case that relied, almost entirely, on testimony from the victim, who said she met Stewart at the See-studio disco in Böblingen on Aug. 22 last year and left with him expecting a one-night stand at her place. Instead, Stewart told a cab driver to take them to his hotel in the early hours of Aug. 23, where he persuaded her to come to his room for a drink, she said.
Once she entered the room, she endured a sadistic rape that included blows to the head and body, hair-pulling and biting, she said.
On Wednesday, Stewart took the stand and admitted that he had sex with the woman but told the court it was consensual.
During his testimony, Stewart said he left his wedding ring in his car before going into the disco because he was afraid of being mugged. He said he told his wife about his affair in November when she gave birth to his first child.
I made a mistake because I cheated on my wife. Im ashamed of it, he said.
His civilian lawyer, David Court, pointed out that the prosecution case was based, almost entirely, on the victims statements and that, since she didnt report the incident for several months, there was no forensic evidence to back up her claims.
He added that she didnt leave the room when Stewart took a shower, didnt call for help from a bedside phone and she wrote her cell phone number on hotel stationery in the room before she left the next morning.
During the court-martial, he was found not guilty of rape, abusive sexual contact and communicating a threat.”
In other words, the accusation outweighs the facts so let the guy hang.
He certainly does by now; either acquired or homebuilt he's got at least one firearm.
Sounds like she set him up and the evidence was quite slim. Using this as a basis any man could be put in jail and lose his career simply when 1 woman says he raped her. no evidence required.
I bet if he were German this wouldnt have happened. He was convicted because he was American and Army.
The A-Team.
It doesn't say he was dressed in his class A's. Just that he took them. Might have been in a suit carrier for all we know. But then again, it could be that this was all the clothes he had. It's just not clear from the article.
I don't think 'genius' as you call him is going to stay in Class A uniform for very long if he was forced to leave in them. Do you? Or did you think you could see the obvious but cannot imagine him being able to? Come on...
Just good advice, take it or leave it. Just hope stories like this make a guy think twice.
Makes me nostalgic for the early years Seagal before all the fat... |
If he wasn't trained to think of these problems, I'm sure he now knows to ditch the phone and car.
Thats my impression too.
This guy has a tough row to hoe. He loses everything whether he runs or surrenders.
Yeah. I would put the phones in something moving myself- a train for example. Easy enough to do in Germany. Or just stop in at an autobahn rest stop and stick it in a lorry. Let them waste time running after that.
It sounds like Stewart had several hours head start before an alarm was raised. That gave him several hours of ‘free time’ in the car before they began trying to track it.
If he headed for Poland or Czech with the car he’d be there in a few hours tops and it would be easy enough to get rid of it there. Just leave it somewhere seedy with the keys in it.
He was court-martialed in a US Army court. He was not convicted by the German government.
