Pelosi: No bill without public option

Pelosi: No bill without public option

Foreshadowing a House-Senate showdown, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday there is "no way" the House can pass a health care bill without a government-run insurance option.

Speaking at a news conference in San Francisco, Pelosi told reporters that a public option will "keep insurance companies honest."

“There’s no way I can pass a bill in the House of Representatives without a public option,” the California Democrat said, according to wire reports. "Unless someone comes up with a better idea, that's how we're going forth in the House."

Pelosi reportedly added: "If someone can come up with a better idea, let them put it on the table, we haven't heard that yet. ... So we're fighting very hard for the public option."

Obama on Thursday told liberal activists and a conservative talk show host that he continues to support a public option, but said it was only a piece of a broader health reform package and continues to signal that it's not a make-or-break issue for him.

Meantime, the Senate seems likely to drop the controversial plan from any bill it proposes. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-S.D.), a key negotiator on the Finance Committee, has emphatically said there aren't enough votes in the Senate to approve a bill with a government-run option.

"It's very clear that there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option," Conrad said Thursday on Fox Business Network.

Who will win this game of chicken?

Correct, there can be no effective reform of either the health care system or of the insurance industry without significant tort reform.

The lack of any possibility of tort reform for the next few hundred years, thanks to the ABA, etc., is the unreported 800 lb gorilla in the room.

But hey, no bill?? Knock yourself out, Nancy!

Keep digging Nancy. It would be great if the dems kill health care reform with their infighting. I would be worried if they took the Co-op road (which is the public option by another name, but seems to be received better for some reason)

If the keystone cops can’t even make simple “Cash for Clunkers” payments, I dread to think how complicated health-care payments might work.

We already know - its Medicare on steroids. It is extremely difficult and takes a long time to get reimbursed from Medicare. Then they send out auditors to take the little money they have actually paid you back in fines and “readjustments”

The ONLY reason medicare is still afloat is that private insurance subsidizes them by paying the difference in costs by paying higher rates on the patients they insure.

The only way people will have the incentive to buy health care is to have a free market....

It works with every commodity. If state and government were outa the picture(no regulations and mandates)telling companies what they can sell and not sell...they could do interstate trade and cost of insurance would find a lower premium level.

Competition in a free market world without government intervention will lower the prices. What in the hell is government doing in the health care business anyway?

I’ll tell ya why they are in there....it’s big business and Politicians demand a piece of their pie.

Every thing they touch...there’s big money for the taking and they don’t give a damn..or a rat’s ass who has to suffer for it.

P*ss on politicians we don’t need them SOB’s anyway.
What the American people really need...a war against our government.Tear it down and start over!!

"Unless someone comes up with a better idea..." "If someone can come up with a better idea..."

The American people have a better idea. All of those folks yelling at you idiots at town hall meetings have a better idea. How about listening to them for a change? (There's that word again, "change")

Nazi Pelosi has spoken ...
We must all follow her because she said so.

When will the people of her district ever wake up and vote her out?

Thanks Seadog. You make them so you know. I have 6 animations up there, I spend 4 to 6 hours on each and seldom get a comment.

Lol, I'm ready to throw in the towel! It's especially funny because the most mundane text comments can elicit many replies sometimes!

The first two together make a powerful statement, and work wonderfully together, even by themselves. Some people learn through pictures. If you get the message across to just one person who otherwise wouldn’t ‘get’ it, you’ve performed a miracle - well worth the time to help save our country.

Good JOB!
