Pelosi: No bill without public option
Foreshadowing a House-Senate showdown, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday there is "no way" the House can pass a health care bill without a government-run insurance option.
Speaking at a news conference in San Francisco, Pelosi told reporters that a public option will "keep insurance companies honest."
“There’s no way I can pass a bill in the House of Representatives without a public option,” the California Democrat said, according to wire reports. "Unless someone comes up with a better idea, that's how we're going forth in the House."
Pelosi reportedly added: "If someone can come up with a better idea, let them put it on the table, we haven't heard that yet. ... So we're fighting very hard for the public option."
Obama on Thursday told liberal activists and a conservative talk show host that he continues to support a public option, but said it was only a piece of a broader health reform package and continues to signal that it's not a make-or-break issue for him.
Meantime, the Senate seems likely to drop the controversial plan from any bill it proposes. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-S.D.), a key negotiator on the Finance Committee, has emphatically said there aren't enough votes in the Senate to approve a bill with a government-run option.
"It's very clear that there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option," Conrad said Thursday on Fox Business Network.

Here Nancy sets up the lefty 'hard line' to counterbalance the strong anti-socialist resistance on the center & on the right, thereby setting the stage for the born again 'moderate' Barack Obama to play Solomon with his 'better way' bogus compromise (i.e, co-ops, the tooth fairy, whatever they want to call it next week) which still gets the same camel's fascistic nose under the tent, and still results eventually in the entire health care industry being completely expropriated from the private sector by the same single payer socialist government in the name of universal coverage.
The state-run media already painted those opposed to their more transparent subterfuge the "Public Option" as radical extremists.
Gee, I wonder what they'll paint the people who will even object to Obama's bogus 'compromise' Trojan Horse Public Option as?

Would that be the “Government Option” she is referring to?
Isn’t there a law about how the government is not allowed to compete against private companies? That’s come up once or twice when I was doing things with the USG.
If so the “public option” with its intent to “keep the private companies honest by providing competition” would seem to violate that.

She’s laying down the gauntlet to the Limp, er Blue Dogs. The House works much differently than the Senate. No bi-partisan is required to run the House. If she had the votes, the vote would have occurred.
We need to make sure it’s always clear that this is not a public OPTION, it’s a public MANDATE and it MANDATES THAT NO MORE PRIVATE INSURANCE POLICIES BE WRITTEN AFTER TWO YEARS.

That's easy. Have her put her money where her mouth is by dropping her health insurance and being the first in the country to sign up for government coverage. If she won't do that, there is no way any American should. If it ain't good enough for her, it ain't good enough for anyone else.
