Republicans balk at Kennedy proposal to change succession law

Massachusetts Republicans spoke out today against a proposal by US Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, under which Kennedy's Senate seat would be filled by an appointment by Democratic Governor Deval Patrick until a special election could be held.

House Minority Leader Brad Jones of Reading said the proposal was based not on "what's best for the whole Commonwealth but based on what's best for one political party."

"The hypocrisy is astounding. If we had a Republican governor right now, would we be getting that same letter?" he said.

“Everybody feels for Senator Kennedy, but the laws shouldn’t be created to benefit particular individuals, it should be principled,” said Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei of Wakefield.

In a personal, sometimes wistful letter sent Tuesday to Patrick, Democratic Senate President Therese Murray, and Democratic House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, Kennedy, the ailing liberal lion, asked the leaders to change the succession law to guarantee that Massachusetts will not lack a Senate vote when his seat becomes vacant, the Globe reported this morning.

Kennedy's poignant acknowledgment of his mortality comes at a critical time in the national health care debate. Although Kennedy does not specifically mention his cancer or the health care debate raging in Washington, the implication of his letter is clear: He is trying to make sure that the leading cause in his life, better health coverage for all, advances in the event of his death.

Top Democrats at the State House remained resolutely silent on the issue today. But one Democratic lawmaker said he was opposed.

The current law was put in place in 2004. Was anything happening that year? Oh, yes, Vietnam War hero John Kerry, who was in Vietnam, was running for President. If he had won, Republican governor Romney would have named his replacement... can't have that! So they required the replacement be elected by the people. Now that the state is safe from the risk of having a Republican senator, the law can return that power back to the governor.

Kennedy also wrote a passioned letter to his pharmacist, asking that prescription deliveries continue upon his demise, to the care of his beloved son ‘Patches’ Patrick Kennedy.

Maybe that should be “toothless liberal lion”?
The only leading cause in Kennedy’s life was re-election.

The a similar sitution happened in NJ. That is how we got Lousenberger in office. He couldn’t debate anyone if his life depended upon it. Demoncrats control NJ so the law was easily passed. The same will happen here.

Now if it was a Republican - NO WAY! It would NEVER happen.

My first thought in reading the article was "Huh? I thought Governors appointed Senators for temporary vacancies as a rule."

Then I remember the special exception the Massholes wrote into law to prevent a Republican from doing just that. The Massholes need to sleep in the nest that they crapped in.

Democrats in MA have the numbers to make it happen. They are hampered by the massive unpopularity of their Governor and the increasing unpopularity (even in MA) of Obama-care.

This is grade-A, once-in-a-lifetime, nauseating, epic hypocrisy. The dems changed this law when Romney was governor so he couldn’t appoint a successor if Kerry had become President.

But now that they have a fellow Rat Governor, they want to change the law back again.

Rat bastards.

The law was changed in the first place because Kennedy wrote a letter to Beacon Hill to keep Romney from naming Howie Carr in case Lurch won.

There are three rules on Beacon Hill.
1) Nothing on the level.
2) Everything is a deal.
3) No deal too small.
