State Del. Terry Kilgore (R) acknowledged Wednesday that top Republican leaders in Washington, D.C., are encouraging him to challenge Rep. Rick Boucher (D) in the Southwestern Virginia 9th district next year.
If he were to run, Kilgore would immediately be considered a top recruit in the conservative district, where Republicans have been frustrated by their inability to field a top-tier candidate to challenge the popular 14-term Congressman.
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) has talked to Kilgore a couple of times about a Congressional bid and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas) has called to talk to Kilgore about the possibility, although Kilgore said he and Sessions have been playing phone tag and have yet to have a conversation on the subject.
Kilgore said he has not seen a poll on his chances in the race.
First elected to the House of Delegates in 1993, Kilgore is the twin brother of former Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore (R), who lost the 2005 gubernatorial race to now-Gov. Tim Kaine (D).

This is for real. Kilgore won’t not make any decision until after the state elections of 2009 in Virginia are over. But if he runs, yet another seat is in play.
A lot of the 1994 victories were from candidates who did not declare until after the NJ and VA gubernatorial elections were won.
“A lot of the 1994 victories were from candidates who did not declare until after the NJ and VA gubernatorial elections were won.”
Excellent point.
It gives me hope for the Senate seats in Colorado, Nevada, Arkansas and maybe North Dakota.
“I'm the one with the mustache; Boucher’s the one with the beard.”
Yes, since I posted to you on the other thread, I’ve confirmed it from different sources. Kilgore is being courted, the NRCC numbers are real.
The question that remains is will he do it. I’d be willing to move back home to help him win.
Terry is a fine fellow. He won’t do it.
It isn’t just in one place, either. I’m getting the same reports from the ground in all parts of the country. People are fed up and then some.
Of course, they’re none too pleased with either major party in large part.
If the Republicans benefit, which they likely will, it will be in spite of their leadership, not because of it.
The Kilgore’s are a fine family! Jerry basically got “macacad” by the libs. Terry would do well to run. Va needs him...BIG TIME!
*snort*
Perfect!
I am hopeful. A decision won’t come until December at the earliest.
In terms of facial hair or the other definition?
Got to say that I agree with your above post. It does capture the zeitgeist of the times.
Well, Kilgore has hair above his lip, while Boucher is clean-shaven. Does that answer your question? : )
Yes. It does.
You know how it scares me when I agree with you. But you're exactly right.
Here’s another possibility. One poll actually has Kilgore leading Boucher, who has represented the district since 1982.
That would be AWESOME in VA.
auh2orepublican: I've got the perfect campaign slogan for Terry Kilgore:
I'm the one with the mustache; Bouchers the one with the beard.
Not another one!
