A young mother gave birth on a pavement outside a hospital after she was told to make her own way there. Mother-of-three Carmen Blake called her midwife to ask for an ambulance when she went into labour unexpectedly with her fourth child. But the 27-year-old claims she was refused an ambulance and told to walk the 100m from her house in Leicester to the city's nearby Royal Infirmary.

Today a spokeswoman for the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust said: 'We are disappointed that Ms Blake was not happy with the advice and care she received and will of course investigate any complaint. 'We are pleased that both Ms Blake and her daughter are well and healthy.'

This story cannot be true. The hateful claim by right-wing extremists and racist Obama critics that ambulance rationing under nationalized health care has been debunked by the AP, Huffington Post, MSNBC, Bill Mayer, ABC......

100 Meters? Lady needs to quit watching TV and leave the house 5 minutes earlier. I have to walk a sixth of a mile to find indoor plumbing. And considering some of the things I eat, I'm getting good at the 1/6th mile dash.

Exactly! This is hardly the hospital’s fault.

Can you imagine the lawsuit if that had happened in the US? However in the UK you can't sue the government for jeopardizing your life with slipshod health care.

The time on the phone was probably longer than the time to get there.....The lady should be happy that the baby is doing fine.

I had a 30% abruption with my daughter. The placenta was already separating.

Walking 100M could have resulted in the umbillical cord detaching, with her dying in utero. My girlfriend's daughter was born a month after mine, and they weren't as lucky. Her baby didn't make it.

Wrapped cord, fecal matter discharge, signs of distress. You don't know till you're in it.

It used to be called "the miracle of birth" for a reason. It's a miracle that babies are born healthy and whole, and a miralce so many survive. As complex as we are (biologically), a million things can and do go wrong.

This story was posted yesterday, what doesn’t appear above is that after being refused the ambulance she was instructed to take a hot bath and then make her way to the hospital. While taking the bath the labor pains excellerated and she realized the baby was coming quickly, that’s when she made her way to the hospital and the baby was born on the pavement. She did what she was told, I don’t think she is a fan of obamacare, I think she’s pointing out the absurdity of the whole program across the pond.

Really ... her 4th child, and she didn’t think to walk to the clinic until 2 minutes before delivery? How long was she sitting around waiting for the midwife to call her back?

That is one thing I couldn’t understand about Obamacare - you add millions of people to the system and overburden doctors, yet they can still be sued at the drop of a hat? How well will that work w/o tort reform, presuming overworked docs are forced to take care of both govt and private patients?

Today the Trust that runs the hospital said it would look into any complaint made about the advice and care the 27-year-old received.

"Walk, lady" is not exactly advice or care, but calling an ambulance to go 100 meters is a bit ridiculous.

This is more of a slur to those who don’t want socialized medicine. Like ‘see, this is just an example of our complaints w/socialized care’ which is basically nothing.

We wouldn’t expect to have an ambulance to go approximately 300 feet.

Dear JRandom:

She wasn't watching TV. She went into labor and the hospital told her to take a bath and come in later. She got into the bath and her labor came hard and fast.

Mom took 6 hours delivering my brother. With me, the doctor had just enough time to catch me (total labor 45 minutes). No prep, no meds, just onto the table and I was already crowning.

This baby's cord was wrapped. The body was trying to expel the child so it wouldn't die inside her.

Exactly.. When you live that close you would think your first instinct would be to walk over there as fast as possible.

‘They said they were not sending an ambulance and told me I had had nine months to sort out a lift.’

What An idiotic and heartless statement. Where is the sense of community and care in this socialized medicine that they are trying to convince us of? We could expect the same or worse, and that’s why the American people are saying ‘no way’.

The point in posting the article is that decisions in socialized medicine will be made with a zero tolerance mentality. There was no common sense in what the lady was told. An ambulance for 100m, of course not, but maybe a golf cart or a taxi. Additionally, I am not sure about the recommendation to take a hot bath before coming down there to the hospital. Maybe some folks with preggers experience can comment as to whether or not that is normally advised.

Sounds like when they told her to take a bath, they were trying to forestall her arrival, like when mothers get to the hospital too soon and are told to go home because they haven’t really dilated enough. Perhaps they had no clue about the fact that this was kid number 4. She’s not an individual to them. She’s just somebody they need to get off the phone.

I think they should have had her start walking and sent somebody outside with a wheel chair to meet her part way.
