I was about to agree with you (an “assault weapon” is nothing more than a scary moniker to frighten the masses), but then you had to add that last sentence. Since when have quicker follow-up shots and improved ergonomics been a waste of money?

How do they know it was a select fire weapon? That's in the Definition of "assault rifle", you know per
FSTC-CW-07-03-70 from November 1970, and was also published in later editions. The book is "Small Arms Identification and Operation Guide - Eurasian Communist Countries".
Oh they mean "Assault Weapon", which is any gun Dianne, Barbara, Chucky and the usual suspects, including CNN, want to demonize.

A semiautomatic rifle with a 20 round magazine and pistol grip is NOT an assault weapon. For all practical purposes it is nothing more than a simple waste of money. While I agree with the first part, even the US Army, and especially the Marines are taught to use the semi-auto setting, except when suppressive fire is called for.
IOW, you can't miss fast enough to do any good, except to make the bad guys keep their heads down.
